My dad just recently lost his job unfortunately and our health insurance has just expired. is it possible to get some coverage under part-time status? if so, how should i go about doing this?

In my area, you can get insurance as a part-timer after a certain time working for the company. We have to enroll by friday this week, though, or we're excluded for all of 2013. Talk to your personnel person asap.
Ours was online enrollment at a web address that was unique to our area. If they haven't posted signs about how to do it at your time clocks and such, the process is different for you.
At least in my area, I seem to remember reading in the contract that courtesy clerks do not ever get insurance if they are part time. You really need to talk to your union steward about that.
