Vacation and personal days

Can someone please explain to me why the dept heads flip out if you don't take your vacation or personal days? I hardly ever use mine and sure enough I'm having my ass rode about it. confuse

My guess is so you don't get paid twice for those weeks.  At the end of the year all vacations and personal days not already taken have to be paid out.  So if you get two weeks vacation and don't take them you're being paid for the vacation and for the time you work.  So you're essentially getting double time.

Which means if you are getting double time, aren't you basically taking someone else's hours? They could get more hours during that week if you'd take your vacation.

All that aside, why wouldn't you take them?

I used to just do my job, and not think about them much, and then soon it was the end of the year, and we had a problem (at another store I worked at) where everyone would take all their weeks at the end of the year. That was a no-no, so with Kroger now, they want us to put in for our weeks early in the year. I try to spread them out. I know not everyone does. Fine with me, if they want to take an entire summer off. More hours for me. I just squeeze 'em in when there's no one else taking them. They're yours...Why wouldn't you want to take them? They get on us, too, about taking them, so what are you gonna do? At another store I worked at, if an employee didn't take them before the end of the year, one boss would just choose a week for the employee. So, I'd rather choose myself, and not make a big deal about it...They can't complain you're not taking your days off, if you're ACTUALLY taking your days off...

Ah...it's always something, isn't it?

They use to allow people to just "cash out" at the end of the year, but recently there were stores out there who weren't allowing people to take their earned personal holidays or vacations because they were "needed". This became an issue that eventually reached the union and human resources. To avoid any and all conflict they won't allow you to just take the money.

Saywhat and Anonymous I usually take them whenever I wish. Cutter your preaching to the choir about cashing them in. Our store doesn't do that either.

Question:

My store is saying that they will pay out the personal days, but not the vacations. Why one and not the other?

I work in the pharmacy too but I can't get a straight answer on how many personal days I get,  I've been there 2 years.

It will be listed in expresshr. Also, the type of time clock we have in my area will tell you how much vacation and ph hours you have left.

Why would you want a week's vacation paid out. Everyone needs time away from work!

I'm not longer in the system.  I was terminated 2 weeks ago and they paid me for only 1 day of personal day and I believe I had more.  Just curious.

If you want to take the time off, more power to you, but if you can work instead, it's an extra paycheck at the end of the year.
