About five or six years ago I saved a ferral cat in my store. It was in the store for about two weeks, I was working on the night crew stocking and the first time I saw the cat it was running around in the Deli. Nobody could catch it, and one night it ran past me and jumped under an isle end cap, so I made my move and looked under there and it was trapped with nowhere to go, so I reached in caught him and he grabbed back and would not let go of my hand and boy did it hurt!!!
I took him to the front end and asked the checker to please get a paper bag and so I put him in the bag and put him in my car and took him home when I got off. It took a little time, but I managed to tame him, by using my other cats. He looked at my cats like they where crazy when they rubbed up against my leg. I had named him Kroger, but I don't have him anymore after about a year he left, catting around and never came back, oh well it was good having him while I did.
Another time, when I was working for a company called Wild Oats, a deer came into the store. boy did it screw up the place as we tried to corral it back up front and out of the store. Funny cause we were in a huge stripe mall and having a deer there is sort of weird

A couple years back we had a bird fly into the store. You know, the front sliding doors are wide open and all the sudden in comes a bird. And we all know once it is in, it is very hard for it to get back out. So anyways, the bird was flying around the store for a couple days now and figured out that the bakery area was a great place to hang. Plenty of bread and stuff to eat, right. Over in the deli, we had this nutty lady working there named JD. You know the type - she is in her late 60's early 70's; came from West Virginia; just a real treat of a lady. She actually thinks she is the living Doctor Dolittle b/c all we ever hear from her is how she takes care of 50 cats and dogs at her home along with feeding all the gophers, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons and whatever. So back to the bird flying around. After several days it was now time to get the damn thing out somehow and several workers were making a concerted effort towards this accomplishment. So along comes JD. She says something like "oh let me take care of it. all animals love me. I can get the bird to fly over to me." She then holds out her finger up in the air towards where the bird is lofting up in the rafters and she proceeds to whistle and go "here birdie birdie". All of us other deli and bakery workers are just standing there looking at her thinking WTF! Well several minutes go by with her whistling and flapping her hands and calling to this wild creature and needless to say the damn thing didn't fly down and land onto her finger. So about a half hour later, in walks one of our meat guys with a pellet gun and he shoots the bird dead. JD almost had a heart attack seeing that! The meat guys picks up the bird and says to her "hey if the bird knew coo coo language then i wouldn't of had to shoot it dead." We all busted out laughing.

Every few years or so, we have to contract out bird killers. That's not what they're called, but it's definitely what they do. We'll shut the store down between 3--5 am, and these guys go around with pellet guns and kill all the birds that have been flying into the store.
Their favorite areas are pets dept., bakery and produce. It's a one-stop shop for them!
In 2008/2009 I was @ J926 in Indianapolis. (It has since closed) Anyhow it was Sunday afternoon and we had a management reflief and I was just getting ready to go home when i heard all sorts of comotion coming from the DSD area. I go back there and the management reflief peson is freaking out, "there is a squirrel back here!" Apparently the backdoor was left open too long and one decided to come in. Knowing what to do. I took a roll or slice of bread from the cart we donated to the food pantry and I looked for the squirrel. I found it the squirrel, it ran up to me took the slice of bread and it ran out the door! We used to feed them day old stuff in the mornings so it's kinda our fault!
This is the original poster that saved the cat, I also saved a bird this year that got in the store. They were going to kill it until I brought it to the attention of the manager that it was our state (Texas) bird the mocking bird and that it was against the law to kill it. My manager had a shocked look on his face like someone hit him between the eyes with a 2x4, well it didn't take long for them to hire a guy to catch it alive.

I remember a guy doing that at a store I worked at. he came in really early in the morning, going around half-****ed, trying to shoot this bird that had been "divebombing" customers for a few months. People complained, but they never could catch the darn thing. So this guy comes in early like 5-6 in the morning, and goes around with a pellet gun, trying to knock his block off. Total waste of time. The guy even came in a second time to try to get the bird, but to no avail. That bird was obviously too smart for him, and he had to leave before the rush of customers started coming in. Eventually, the bird disappeared, and I think someone said they found feathers stuck in a fan somewhere in the building. Boy, you would think they would've found an easier and cheaper way to do it, though.
Funny enough some years back, around the hurricane katrina disaster we had a ****atoo(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galah) walking around our parking lot looking for food. Was definitly out there a while because it was very weak and skinny. It had Florida tags on it so i assumed a family had packed up and came here to stay with family, and had lost the bird. With no way to contact the owner of the bird, i took it home and it has been a treasured part of our family for years.
somewhere a few years ago i dont remember where i was working but a mama goose was strutting thru the parking lot with about 6 tiny baby gooslets in toe. she paraded right by the front door of the store going across the whole entire parking lot. i took a photo on my cell but God knows whatever became of that.

We have a drainage pond in the back of our property. Every year there are new generations of ducks, geese and mallards that thrive there, tho I can't imagine how: It's a chemical repository. Hardy creatures these things must be.
But in the last year or so, people will actually drive thru our back truck/maintenance area over looking that pond, just to stop and stare at all the wild life, like it's a natural preserve or park. I'm thinkin' "REALLY?? You seriously have no better place to be than HERE??"
