Ring tender help?

Hi, could anyone please give me some tips on how to increase my rind tender? I'm getting really nervous about losing my job over being too slow.

I already know about the using both hands, to close the register and reopen it for cashback/change/etc, and all those little tidbits. I'm mostly worried about price checks, items that won't scan, customers writing checks/taking forever to look for change, etc etc.. Any way to reduce time for that kind of stuff?

My tender time is still 20-25/.50-60 if I'm lucky, and obviously I'd like to go above that if possible. :(

1-Let the customer or a bagger unload as much as possible before you start. If you notice, on big orders, which should help boost your IPM, you are instead scanning the first several items quickly, but then waiting as they unload about 1 item per minute with one hand while talking on the phone, etc.
2-Ask for the plus card before you start. Don't force them to have it scanned before you start the order, but at the very least they will be finding it while you are scanning.
3-Similarly, for payments, ask how they are paying before you are finished so they can start retrieving that wad of 1's from six different pockets in their purse and bra and shoe.
4-If you aren't too familiar with PLUs for produce, check to see what they have before you start so you can already have the number ready.
5-If you already have to drag something across the scanner, don't scan it with the hand scanner unless you have to. You only get .4 sec of time earned for doing that as opposed to 2-3 sec for scanning it on the scale.
6-Become semi-familiar with sales. Don't worry about memorizing every price, but take a look at the sales ad. The major featured prices you should know. Especially the 6 and 10 item mega events, buy this get this coupon at checkout, buy 4 get 2 MORE free, 4/$11 if you buy 4 but 3/$11 if you dont, those "unusual" deals cause the most questions.

I have more if you need.

You can also let the customer know they can swipe their card during the order before it totals up and once you hit to take the credit card that also speeds up your time too.

Those tips are wonderful, thank you! If you have more, though, could you toss them my way? I'm still relatively new (2 and a half months) at my job and they are pushing it on us that we have to be at 95% or else. :/ I wasn't aware of the hand scanner having reduced time, though. I'll keep that in mind. Sometimes I'll use it when i have several of something because I thought it used the same timing as the actual scanner. Thanks for the advice.

You could always stop worrying. You can not be fired over ELMS.

Just do your best.

If you are taking 2 items at a time already when you scan.......try using your scan gun on item you know are going to be problem item......ie manager markdown tags....items that a seasonal that have extremely small bar codes.....items that you know just won't  scan from experience.  Try to learn one produce code a shift you work so your knowledge base of non-scanable item becomes larger......Best of luck.

are you using the old keyboard checkstands or the new touch screen ones? if you're using the old ones, simply hitting "total" "check" "check" "enter" will freeze the timer on your order. use this when a customer is taking a long time to look for change, when they're writing a check, etc. you can perform a similar trick on the new systems by hitting "total" "check" "enter" "accept", though doing this only slows the timer down and does not stop it completely. play around with this idea and see if it improves your score. i usually sit in the 180s on our new touch screen systems with my highest being a 196. good luck!

Don't be too sure.  If the OP is on probation, they can be let go for any reason.  They are not eligible for the union yet if they were working at my store.

That is like clocking out 6 minutes early or clocking in 6 minutes late.  Some managers don't care while the rumor is our new contract will be writing people up that do.  The old timers get really pissy with people that do that.

You may be lucky enough that this still works in your division, but in most divisions it stopped doing anything years ago. All it does now is improve your items per minute while your tender time suffers, with the net effect of doing nothing to your actual ring tender score.

Lol and you also were likely put on red flag for cheating or will be soon enough, that's not something you want to be written up for. No one can legit get anything past about 160% (and this is a 2 hour register hero scenario at best, with a lot of suspend order help from a manager key) without some way of freezing time completely.  I am curious though, did they just give you like a free gift or something? That's like 13 gift cards with our current system...

ring tender is how long from the time the reciet prints out a little bit after scanning the first item to the time it prints out all the way. my ring tender is 140 at the end of each week and my ipm is 37-44 depending on my week. ipm can be stopped by securing the terminal. ring tender cant. when a customer first comes to the register get everything off of the bottem and line it up on the belt bar code up, scan with the scan gun. then once your done with that customer and their taking the time to pay, line as much for the next customer as you can on the belt and when the previous customer is finished paying start scanning the stuff on the belt, then move on to whats in the cart. continue to do this until you run out of customers and get a break. makes everything move way faster and it brings your ipm and ring tender up. hope this helps
