not enough hours? keep hiring!

I wish I knew the rationale behind the endless hiring of cashiers on the front end.  We've just added four more and there's not enough hours for the ones we have now.  They move to other depts to get hours.

They get pushy about ELMS but cut hours for the fastest cashiers and move them away from the registers and front end more and more.

This is contradictory and self-defeating.

because of those 4 that they hired, 3 of them will quit within the first month or two

Because they want to limit hours. More people the least hours everyone except full time.

limiting hours costs them money and drives off good employees.

Coca-Cola Retailing Research Council had a study showing the replacement cost of one supermarket cashier is over $3,637.  confuse

In general, the hiring manager at your store hires people because they are told to. They get emails from corporate saying "hire x people for y position" and they have to do so. They aren't told the why, just the what.

Stealing good cashiers from the front end is simply a product of good ELMS scores making them appear to be an excellent worker, so your other departments steal them away. They aren't sent away from FE, they are taken away.

It will only get worse over the next year or so.

Consider this.

When Obummer care kicks in, Kroger will have to pay full time health benifits to everyone that works 30 a week or 120 hours a month.

I will and can see Kroger flooding the stoires with part timers that will only get about 20 to 24 hours a week.

Thats already happening at my store. Not even floor supervisors have more than 33 hours here.

However, my store does have a few cashiers that are usually in the top 5 for elms, me included. I often see our schedules at 38-40 for 11 weeks and then on the 12th week to get full time, we get cut to 15 hours a week. Then it starts over again so we dont qualify for the stupid Obamacare crap.
