What is it about closing time that makes it so attractive for customers? No matter how dead you are during the day, when 8:55 rolls around, that's when it seems like the customers all come flocking to the deli. And of course once there's a line going, people keep getting in line after 9 and we're not allowed to refuse them as long as there's another customer in line. Sometimes so many people line up that it's 9:20 by the time we're done. And even if we shut at 9 without incident, there will always be someone who walks up right after we close and ask if we're closed, and then when I say yes, they say "pleaaase all I need is 1 pound of turkey and 1 pound of ham and 1 pound of cheese." "I'm sorry, the slicers are down for the night." "Pleaaaase come on make an exception!" Why should I? What is so hard about getting here before we close? I know for a fact some of these customers already KNOW we close at 9 because they always do this.
Some other people say yes to helping a customer after closing, but I say no because of the rule that we have to wait on other people who line up afterwards - if I say yes, then it's almost guaranteed that more people will come running up. Plus they should really learn that closing time is closing time and get to the deli earlier.
Then there are the old guys who start whining that "on MY watch it says there's 15 seconds until 9 and my watch is the most accurate watch out there blah blah blah..." I always say "sorry, but we go by our clocks back here."
Deli at my store closes at 10 yet we still get the same crap. Had a customer aske at 10 if we were going to be putting out any more fresh fried chicken.

I would have told him,"Yes, tomorrow morning".
Some of my fellow co-workers would turn off the lights about 15/20 til 10 and wash dishes in the back to avoid this, until management got a couple complaints.
I love the people that ask as you are putting out the first batch if that is today's chicken or from yesterday.

The girl doing chicken today is a very nice, friendly person and very religious. Never has a bad thing to say about anyone until some idiot asked her if the chicken was made today as she was pulling it oit of the fryer.
We always have customers come up and ask "are you closed?" when our display lights are off and we're washing the slicers. No we're open, we just turn the lights off so they won't hurt your sensitive eyes at night!
One time I clocked out and was doing some shopping and I happened to walk past the deli and there was a customer standing there, craning his neck to see if anyone was back there and calling out "hello? Are you open??"
Does anyone else's store have the rediculous policy of 'Your Deli closes at X but your shift ends at the exact same time'? We're not suppose to stay overtime but we're not suppose to refuse customers, so wth? Our solution is breaking down slicers early. We close at 10, but we only have 2 slicers up at 9, and 1 by 9:30, and when 10 'til rolls by, we completely shut down and hope we don't get an old miserable soul who lives to complain about disservice.
I've heard that too in the bakery. At my store, bakery closes at 9 and deli closes at 10. There's been a couple times someone comes in at 8:59 and wants to order a cake. Then they say no one should stay overtime. But the time clock is on the other side of the store.
I work in the deli. I believe you should wait on customers up till 10pm then that is it! We usually have several closers and some are doing dishes and cleaning while one is on the chicken area and one is waiting on customers if any. When then come past closing time, I would kindly recommend the pre-packs. I use to say things like "we're open 7 days a week from 8 am until 10 pm. that's 98 hours to make it here during operating hours" or "my family is waiting for me to come home. sorry."

It wouldn't be so bad if we had enough closers. We always have one in the chicken area and one, maybe two on a good night who's suppose to do everything else.
ultimately just suck it up and take care of the ******* customers who come in at the last second. it isnt that big a deal.
Says you. What gives you the right to decide whether a thread is dumb or not? This is the place to talk about all things Kroger isn't it? I bet if you were scheduled off at 9:00 and had to always stop and wait on last minute customers you'd be complaining too.

The deli at our store is supposed to be open till 9 pm, but we turn off the lights at 8 45, of course all i have to do is clean the slicer and then leave at 8:53 pm. we have 2 guys who come in at 5 pm to clean our department until 10 pm, they dont slice meat or do anything other than clean.
