I was doing great my first week with a few errors here and there but today was the worst. I guess i accidentally entered 11 as a quantity instead of one and charged some lady for 11bellpeppers and then I was trying to type in the Kroger card number and accidentally hit "cash tender" and it showed I entered like $4,000 in the cash tender, then I hit EFT and didn't realize the lady already swiped her card so I didn't do any of her coupons and she was pissed she had to go to customer service. I sucked so hard today and was too embarrassed to make eye contact with any of the managers because I was so ashamed of the just plain careless, dumb stuff I did. Is this a normal level of sucking for being new or have I won the award? lol. I was doing so well until today...

As far as hitting the wrong cash tendered amount goes, it doesn't matter as long as you give back the correct change for the amount of money the customer gives you. If the total comes to $18.00 and the customer hands you a $20 bill and you accidentally key in $200.00 just make sure you give them back just $2.00 and not $182.00. The register is only concerned with the $18.00 from the sale. As long as there's 18 more dollars in the till you're good to go.

I learned this is also somewhat true if you hit 'cash' instead of 'check'. You'll be short on cash but there'll be a check and accounting will see that so the drawer will still balance. I was told it happens and there's cash back, you hand them their cash back as normal.
Haha, no problem... It makes me feel extra dumb because two of the manager supervisor thingies are younger than me and not very personable, so it always makes me feel like they are scowling at me... I'm not saying I should be smarter than them because I'm older than them, it's just one of those weird social things I can't explain, I guess. lol. Maybe I feel like I should be setting a good example as a college graduate while they are still in college, and I go and do this dumb stuff. Hehe.
It happens. Just go a little slower and take your time. Don't worry about percentages or anything else. Don't worry about the customer service managers either, they should help you, not make you feel like you're dumb. If you're still close to that college age then you're still pretty young yet, give it about 10 years and I promise you won't care what people think about you. Just do your best..but TAKE YOUR TIME!!! When you get more comfortable with it you'll be awesome. Good luck!

This is technically true, but it is always best to make sure you tell whomever is running the floor at that time what happened. We can do something at the checklane to fix what happened after the fact. I also do the accounting side of things and I can tell you that when the checks don't match (even if it balances with the cash) that it can be a massive pain and delay to figure out.
Yea here is my 2 ˘ worth on this. People learn from their mistakes. You had a rough day and you aknowledge it. Crap happens. You seem genuine. You will be more aware next time and won't let it happen again. Move on grass hopper

I've had instances where I accidentally hit cash tender instead of check, rang up 42 cucumbers instead of 2, and others that would make yours seem like small mistakes. It just goes with the territory of being a cashier. I have learned to backtrack and to correct my mistakes. Stuff happens... just correct it and move on. :)

See... I thought there might be. that's why I asked right away but she said just put the check in the drawer and give cash back if there was cash back.
she's on the accounting side of things too. she probably didn't want to deal with it right then since we were so busy.
Well if she knew about it and knew how to fix it but didn't, she is creating more work for the bookkeeper in the morning than it would have taken to fix it out on the floor. It doesn't have to be fixed right away, so there is plenty of time later. It's called a tender correction and it only takes 15 sec or so.
I always forget that I can do a tender correction in the heat of the moment. I always call a supervisor and they fix it right away. I made one such mistake yesterday. I saw the lady pulling out cash, but didn't know that she wanted to do gift cards first, and I went ahead and cashed out the order before she could tell me (because of ELMS) and had to call the supervisor to fix it.
Haha. I do that too... and some lady set her WIC checks on top of some random item instead of just handing it to me & I didn't see it until I scanned like 5 items. Grrr. Luckily I can void like a pro since I've scanned stuff twice so many times.lol
