Anyone heard of this? In Michigan, laws have been changed due to the right-to-work legislation that was pushed through by the governor. Now, the union stewards are asking employees if they'd like to stay in or opt out of the union. If they want to stay in, there's a form to fill out. If they opt out, then no union dues are taken from your paycheck. There are those who are staying in, though, for insurance purposes/other reasons...Just curious...what do you guys think of this? Any thoughts?
I can tell you this companies want to break up and resolve unions to help drive their profits up and replace you with flexible part-time employees with no benefits. It is true that the more people whom are in the union also makes it appear that you are strong and united. Most people will blame the union for their contracts and what not but you only have yourself to blame for them. If you want to build a stronger union it requires YOU to be involved. This includes attending meetings and voting on the contracts. Why would 2% of the attendance of union members voting for the other 98% hmm?

For this to happen there has to be communication but ultimately it's up to the union steward/rep and ours is useless.
In my personal opinion, if your plan is to stay with Kroger for a long period of time or career, stay a member. If you are a student and or working at Kroger for a short period of time I would understand if an employee wanted to opt out.
In addition to my post. For those who opt out of membership, you are still a member of the union per say, but you are not able to vote ( not a big issue to those who not in it for the long run)and what else?
Your wages, vacation time, personal days, insurance rates, breaks, and seniority rights, are all things the union has "done for the people in your store." Having higher ranks of union members DOES give you more bargaining power.
Nobody may opt out of the union until the contract is up. In 876, this happens on June 15 of this year. I would advise all people, especially if they've been there for a long time (or plan on staying), to remain members. Especially if you have insurance there - I hope you all understand that your weekly contribution, plus dues, are STILL less than what every other retailer requires of it's employees. If people start bailing, I'd expect that to be one of the first concessions the company expects workers to take.

hint: they can do this whether or not there's a union
