There are five part time people in our department and 7 full timers. We used to have 16 people, now we are down to 12. So I see this sign made by our department manager that reads : Accepting applications for part time clerk / truck person. No experience necessary. 15 to 30 hours per week. See department manager for more details.
Why now give some of those hours to us part timers that have had our hours cut in half ? You say hours are tight and have to be slashed because its "slow" yet you have 15 to 30 hours per week to give to someone off the street ? Thanks for pissing off the people who have had to do more with less !
And then, our president says he wants to raise the minimum wage...Hmmm...Do you think they'd hire more people, if they had to pay them more? I wonder...
ok so how much does a full timer make? how much does a new par timer make? if you were the employer, which one would you bring in? your over all pay roll will be cheaper with the part timers working i bet

That's exactly it.
Plus, when f.t. is cut down to pt status, they lose benefits, which saves even more. This week alone, I was forced to trim hours down from 36/wk to 33 and even 30.....this was done to ft peeps who've been there and worked hard for many years. We have elderly people greeters that we are being forced to relocate on over nights and/or as cashiers. THAT is one of the hardest things to deal with. I had an 86 year old woman come to me in tears the other day.
The good news with the hrs reduction, I can quietly turn around and pad them back up for those who want them. It falls under business needs, so I'm covered if my bosses come after me. As for the people greeters; nothing I can do. This is a corp. thing.
Over all, I'm seriously pretty sick of retail management and giving hard thought to seeking something else....F A S T.
With the high cost od benifits and the Obummer care coming to an employer near you, most companies will be going to more part timers to avoid the full time health care that will kick in at 120 hours per month.
Then there is the beginning of a new year and getting new people hired in ( about a two to three week process) so they can be trained to fill in for vacations.
Then there are contracts to be negociated and Kroger will hire in more people ( part timers) to cover the thought of a strike.
there can be many reasons but the one they will always bring up is the frexability to schedule people when they need them and not when the worker needs to work.
The president's name is Obama. I get sick and tired of all the "creative" nicknames like Obummer when I never went around calling Bush anything so stupid as that.
Back on topic though... Does anyone honestly think that the Affordable Care Act is really hurting the Kroger Corp and that they wouldn't be able to support all its workers?
Of course not. They're just greedy. Surprise surprise.
And they won't replace hours at my store. A guy in my department called in everyday he was scheduled last week and they never replaced his shifts even though he called in hours ahead of time before his shift. And last week a lady who runs our u-scan had to take off because of heart problems. Maybe she couldn't call in time for her first shift, but management didn't even bother to replace her other four shifts. They just pulled a cashier to run the u-scan and bugged the crap out of the departments to take up the slack.

two pionts here . piont one I voted the first time around for oboma and it was a bummer for me. Also voted for little bush and he was the biggers disapiontment as far as a president I voted for vs what I expected.
Now as far as the affordable care act, Kroger will not do anything differant that any othe company will do. They can afford the costs but may want to opt out and pay the fees or whatever it may be for the employees to fall into the government plan. Whatever is the best in a consistant and cost saving more is what they will do. If it was not for the unions then the health care would be on par with Walmart or other employers like that.
Now as to is Kroger can afford it I will only state theys few things here to ask. Since our last contract we was about a 25% increase in their stock. There was a 50% oncrease in dividends payed per share. And we seen dave Dillon get a 66% pay increase.
There is money there just where they want to invest it. The employees , stores or corperate benifits.

Have two people in my department that needs suspended and /or terminated but they do not have the new hires or people to cover the shifts withour causing OT. Biggest problem in the markets around here is the lack of experianced help to replace those that needs to be gone.
In my department there are mostly part timers that work 36-40 hours a week for years! All of them trying to make full time but can only do that with a bid to a different store. We have a few full timer's retiring and instead of making those loyal part timers full time, they will be hiring more part timers.
