Why is it so hard to schedule my freaking vacations when I ask for them??

I asked for my vacation during my spring break, March 3rd. I even wrote "March 3rd" on the paper. Well guess what? I'm on vacation this week. Wtf? And it's not like someone with more seniority got that week, I have the second most senority in my department and no one else even asked for that week off. This isn't the first time that's happened, last year the same thing happened.  I had plans for spring break so now I'm going to have to ask for that week off. no

They can't do that.  If you have your vacation(s) down on the official vacation calendar by the deadline and they don't say anything about there being a conflict, they have to let you take your vacation when you want to.  The only time they can make you go on vacation a certain week is if you didn't have all your vacations down by the deadline.  For my division the cutoff date is March 15th.  Management then has until April 1st to approve or disapprove everyone's choices.  If too many people in a department pick the same week then the person who's been there the longest gets it.

What should I do then? I complained about it and they were just like "ohhh, sorry. Nothing we can do, it's in the system now."  No one even told me I wouldn't be getting my vacation when I asked for it.

And the worst part is that now I don't even know when my other two vacations are going to be. Are they going to be on the date I asked for them, or some random week in a random month?

Tell them to take it out of the system then.  Get the union involved if you have to.  Be firm and tell them no, you are not taking your vacation the week they have down.

Send a copy of your vacation request to management, hr and the union.

They never gave us these sheets until this year. Does it automatically put you off that week on the schedule or do you still have to write in a request the week before?

It''s always been fill out the sheet and automatically get your vacations for us. No request necessary

Well, it doesn't automatically put you off.  Your department manager or whoever makes out the schedule for your department still needs to check it each week when he or she makes out the schedule.  Also, in order to get paid for your vacation you still have to notify payroll.

That's a load of bull.  If they're talking about the timeclock system, they can easily add your hours in if you want to work this week.  It's done all the time.

Exactly. Yet another great management lie.

Again: salaried managers can do pretty much anything they want to do where it concerns hourly employees.

We've never had to notify anyone, except for turning in the vacation schedule slips at the beginning of the year.  I never write notes to anyone or notify anyone and I still get my vacation, and get paid for my vacation.
