Call offs in inclement weather!

At work Sunday a note was posted by management about call offs in bad weather.  And it stated that they are tired of us using the weather as an excuse to call in.  And it's (according to the letter) usually people who live closest to the store that call in the most during bad weather and that 95% of the employees make it in inclement weather.  Also stated was that starting now excessive call-offs (more than one a month) will face progressive disciplinary action with each excessive call in.  When calling in we must talk to a manager, and if one isn't available we must call back as soon as possible when they are available.

Just wondering if anyone else out there has faced anything like this?  Seems to me to be th managers nit-pick item of the day/week/month?

P.S. Last I called in and a manager wasn't available, and this was around 6 in the evening, I didn't waste my time calling back.  I was too sick to worry about them and by the time the manager was available, I was out cold by the meds I was given!  I let them know I wasn't coming in more than 12 hours before I was scheduled again so they had plenty of time to figure it out.

its just a basic managerial scare tactic that will work on most employees.  look - it got you talking about it. and i'm sure you are not the only one who is.  whatever is written in your contract as the sick / call out policy stands.  they can not override it.

had several years ago , a threat of termination if I did not come to work in the middle of a snow and ice storm. A quick call to the union rep and a call back to the store made it clear. NO EMPLOYEE IS TO TAKE ANY CHANCE OF HARM TO THEIRSELF WHILE MAKING IT TO WORK. Any attempt to force the issue will be met with grievances and law suits if there is any harm or damage to the employee or their property. Never had that again from management.

Bad thing is all our managers have 4 wheel drives and don't have that big of a problem getting to the store.  And they don't get that in our town the side streets are the last to get treated so a lot of us do get stuck in town.  It's like this, if I don't feel I can get there safely I'm calling in.  If they fire me fore it, at least I'm alive to get fired!

If 95% of employees make it in to work, then they can do without the 5% for a day, the managers can just suck it up.

I'll tell you one thing that pissed me off about 2 years ago when we had opened up a Kroger Marketplace. We had a mixture of sleet and snow fall in the early morning and I had to be at work 6 am - 2 pm that day which I ended up staying until 6 pm. My trip was a 30 minute one to get there. Well, we had a call-in because of the conditions on the roads, but here is the thing. He lived 2 blocks away, he could of walked to the store!

It's still BS.  They same most accidents happen close to home but that's ridiculous.  What bugs me is people who live right by the store are the ones who get there late.

I wouldn't walk in that.  Sleet is slippery. What if he fell on the pavement and broke a bone?  Plus it's freezing outside.  I don't live far from the store, but the roads here are dangerous in the winter.  I call off. If others who live further want to risk it, that's their perogative, it has nothing to do with me and my comfort zone. I put my own safety first.

I acknowledge and understand your point of view.
