Why do people respond to posts that are well over a year old or more old?

Let's try that again.  Why do people respond to posts that are well over a year or more old?

They don't look at the date.

They have it set to the latest post instead of the most recent post. I have it set to the most recent post and respond to the ones on the front page :P

as the moderator to this site, i wondered about that as well. my belief is they are newbies to this forum and are just randomly reading posts.  then all the sudden they find one they like and respond to it.  thats my take of it

i might've done that before.  if it's a topic that got lots of comments but my specific question wasn't addressed i'll just respond to the old thread to keep the rehashing down.  maybe it's a bad idea.

Managed a forum myself for a little while. The dude hit it on the head. Generally they post because they are not looking at time stamps, and if they topic search it can happen to just about any topic.
I too tend to just respond to things on the front page, or at worst a few pages out if I am really sitting down for some reading.
We have the added note that we are fairly nice about that sort of thing here. A lot of other forums, the members turn into raging morons if someone posts in a dead thread, insulting the person terribly. Basically that does not make a big problem of doing it here like it might other places.

If anyone is cares, doubtful as it may be, the general term for posting in dead topics is "necroposting"

well as for me (and the rest of the regulars on here) we have read most all of the posts on here.  only the new ones come up as "unread" so i look at those and ignore the others.  if a newbie come on here, i presume all the threads are marked as "unread".  then its like a kid in a candy store for some who just start reading away...
