Do they write on your schedule when you're bumped, or what?  Are you supposed to ask someone if it was approved?

You should have more hours than those below you on your classification's seniority list. If you have less hours than those beneath you, you are entitled to someone else's hours if there aren't any other "available" hours.

Also, depending on your contact, AND if you are NOT restricted, you may be able to take someone else's daily schedule or their weekly schedule if they have less seniority. It depends on your contract. I believe many contracts that allow bumping now require that you must be able to work that person's entire week schedule.

Yea it varies from contract to contract so I suggest you read yours or ask the union steward for a copy of it.  Keep it handy for situations like this!

 Anyway...

Bumping must be accomplished by Saturday 3pm.  A person of higher seniority can claim (bump) any employee below them of their scheduled shifts.  It can be part of a shift; the whole shift; or even multiple shifts.  Most people claim a shift for a shift.  The nuances can get complicated and vary store to store on partial shift bumping.  So the person writes on paper the shift they are bumping then give to the manager.  The manager needs to act upon it in a timely fashion by either declining it (because it is invalid / done wrong) or accept it.  When accepted the manager must go to the schedule and make the change and initial it and right "claimed".  Idealy, the manager will go to that employee and say" john claimed your hours...."  Then that person can go and bump the next person if they wish.

Make sense?

Well I succeeded in bumping someone. There was lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth. People in my store bump and get bumped all the time, but for the girl I bumped you would think I killed her mom by the way she was carrying on.

so you took her hours and now you're making fun of her for being upset ?   classy.

Did you have a legitimate reason for bumping her or were you just being an a$$hole?

Yep - not getting enough hours.  They're giving the new people a lot of hours.  Many of the older employees aren't getting enough as of late.  I don't like to bump people but I've been getting around 20 hours as of late whereas they've been hiring new people and giving them tons of hours. no Same goes for two of my coworkers who have been there longer than me.  My schedule is totally open too. It just sucks, and they keep hiring new people. It's frustrating.

I wouldnt worry about it if I were you. It's not a weekend in our store if someone's not causing a drama about a bump lol. It just comes with the territory.

Maybe my store is the exception but I've been there over 20 years and I've never heard of anybody bumping somebody else's schedule and claiming their hours.  Now there have been times when someone with less seniority has been given more hours than a person with more seniority and the person with more seniority complains.  But all they do then is simply give the person with more seniority enough hours to make up the difference.  If it's a lot, then they simply borrow a few hours from people with less seniority.  I have never seen or heard of anyone claiming another person's shift or whole schedule for that matter.  It sounds pretty dirty and rotten to me.

if everybody is set to automatic in the computer it should produce a schedule based on seniority and availability.  but then you also have schedule writers who play games and schedule against availabilities or do stuff out of spite.

I think it depends on the store. There's a lot of bumping in our store because even if someone with seniority complains, they don't give them more hours.  Our schedule is never complete on the day it comes out, since there's always a lot of bumps. The "finalized" version comes out on Saturday evening and even then there's a lot of schedule swapping to accomodate the bumps that people can't work.

You do what you gotta do. I don't think you did anything wrong by bumping, and from the fact that you didn't know how to bump, I'm guessing you don't bump people a lot. I hope you get more hours.

I've never seen anyone bump someone else in my store, and there's been weeks where some of the people with more seniority only get 30 hours. Right now everyone has about 40 but only because of vacations and sick leave.
But maybe it happens in other departments.

We have about 2 bumps per week. So while I wouldn't say that's a lot, they're not uncommon either. I've bumped a few times.  Most people in my store are pretty understanding about it.

to the original poster ...  i wouldnt lose sleep over bumping that person and how she carried on.  it should be an emotionless process.  she has a right to bump the lest person all the way down the food chain.  we all joined the union and understand the process so we should all understand the logic / reason behind it.  sure, its not fun having to or be on the receiving end of a bump but its part of business.  when i play poker and take some one's chips I NEVER APPOLOGIZE.  Just move on.

bumping shouldnt happen if the person who wrote the schedule did their job and made the perfect schedule. so its not your fault - its the manager

Wait a second----is it the fault of the union, or the part of doing business, or the part of the poker card dealer, or the scheduling manager's?

I think this business of robbing good, dependable workers of their hours just because they're new and looking to better themselves and the company, and being stolen by other people who may or may not be good OR dependable, just because the've been there longer and have NO reaason to work better, S T I N K S.

I'm all for fair, un preferential Union Representation. But not this bull sht.

Why do you give the new workers the benefit of the doubt that they're good and dependable, but say the older workers may not be good or dependable? From the way you describe it, it sounds like Kroger is hiring a bunch of saints who just want to benefit themselves and their company and the evil older employees foil their plans.  For all you know, the person the original poster bumped might suck at her job.

Bumping isnt fun for anyone but its allowed by the company, and if you're getting screwed when it comes to getting hours, I'd say you'd be an idiot not to, especially if you're hard up for money. When I was a newbie I was bumped almost every week.  I never pitched a fit over it. Now that I've been there longer, I can bump, and some day those people under me will be able to bump if they want to.

I see your point. Working hard and learning more for a long time makes sense in the scenario you describe, and I applaud you if that's what you've done.

However.

Let me putt this all another way: if you're an elected official, like say a Federal Judge on the bench, and no one can remove you-----what incentive do you have to change, grow or improve anything? NONE. You're going to get paid and get fat and keep your job regardless. And that's all I've ever seen from long-term union protected employees (YEP, the UFCW is not a sovereignty this way). Give a man a couch and he will sleep on it, not build more couches.

Without proper work incentives, people in this country are already too quick to seek illegal businesses or---worse---seek public assistance.

Yeah, I stand by what I said. Taking other people's hours is BULL SH-T.

We all joined the union?  Umm... NO.

Me and many of my coworkers never joined the union.  You're paying more than an hours' wages every week ... but what for?  As protection money?  The right to bully coworkers?  Nothing about bumping was covered when we were hired.  I see people call out, yell at managers, do nothing and they still have their jobs, still get paid, get their raises.

At my store we don't even have the union contract available to review.  I go to my local's website and all it does is bash Walmart and lie about how it does wonderful things for "working families."  It doesn't tell me anything useful.

And yeah it's the manager's fault but, guess what, the manager DOES NOT CARE.  It's not their problem.  When it happened to me, I was told only people paying union dues can bump and if I wanted the hours I had to hope somebody called out.

Hard work and merit mean nothing and the union is a major disincentive.

The original poster never said she sucked at her job.  But yeah, it's called experience.  Open your eyes and look around your department and store.

Watch who comes to work five minutes late... OR MORE (like my dept manager), calls off the most and walks off the floor just after they know they'll still get paid for that 15 minutes.  On the front end if you want a price check done, send a young new courtesy clerk.  The old timers will stroll through the store if they can even find the thing.

Personally, i think bumping is kind of a dick move too, nocturnia.

If you aren't getting enough hours, go complain to the ones who can do something about it, don't just take it out on the person below you.

Yes, because complaining to the people who can do anything about it ALWAYS works.

Same thing here. My contract doesn't mention bumping at all. When a employee with more seniority has less hours than those with less seniority, the scheduler will simply add hours in for that person. I was told bumping wasn't allowed, and the only thing you're obligated to is hours.
