CRAZY AZZ PSYCHO SNOW STORM!

So........Does Kroger's management team try to make you come in or stay there when there's a county wide weather emergency? We got DUMPED UNDER with the craziest, epic snow storm I've seen in years. My boss wanted me to stay (of course, he was at home!)......Not only did I leave, but I let my whole crew take off early. My call? I'da shut the damn store DOWN.

I'm ready to take the heat over this. There is N O T H I N G important enough to risk your life for, going to a freakin' store in the middle of a blizzard!

My county doesn't do level snow emergencies like other counties in Ohio does. While we got a ton of snow, the roads in the town I live in aren't that bad. My manager (NOT the store manager) would have called and told me to stay home if it was bad out. We had a blizzard day after christmas and I imagine there was a ton of call offs. I never heard anyone complain about it though. Driving in it doesn't bother me, I'll drive in snow any day over ice!

How much did you get? I think we only got about 4-5", with a couple more inches of a wraparound snow band coming today.

13 INCHES.

Before drifting. Man. I've been driving through winters a montha Sundays; NEVER had it like this. And it took everybody by surprise, too! Small dusting at dawn that melted off by 10 am. Then it came down in ERNEST for the next 14 hours.

I stand by my decisions. When you have a county wide shut down, all stores should follow suit.

Wow. You got your butt handed to you. In situations like that, then stores should follow suit. A store manager doesn't have as much knowledge about road conditions on every single route that every single employee takes that they think they do. I used to live in BFE, and while the two lane highway a couple miles away was clear, my road was impassable for a couple days if you didn't have 4-wheel drive.

When I managed a small store, I had a 100 mi round trip commute 6 days a week. If it snowed bad, I worked from home and told my employees (who lived in the same town the store was in) to use their judgement on how the roads were. If it looked better later, then go open for a couple hours. If it looked like hell, stay home.

We had the same storm. A quick burst of a dusting that melted quickly, then around 8pm the first few flakes started. By the time I went to bed at 11:30, we had over an inch and a half and it had only REALLY been snowing for about half an hour. Craziness. Roads were perfect today when I left my house around noon.

We had about 8 inches here today.

I called in at 11, told the comanager who answered, hey I don't think I can make it in today, I did go outside and check out the roads, and it looks bad out here.

His response?

Well why don't you wait and see if you can come in later and do part of your shift.

I said no. I mean, if I was supposed to get off work at 9, it was going to be even worse by then, the roads will drift shut again, and my car isn't exactly 4 wheel drive.

He gets snippy with me and was like "well I had to drive an hour to get here and i made it". He probably has a brand new truck or something too and doesn't have to take backroads to get there! So he's probably pissed at me but I don't really care. It's better out here now so if I really wanted to, *maybe* I could make it in for a few hours, but f**k him, I go in and do extra hours all the time, it happens at least once a month, usually more, and when I can't make it in ONE time when there's a level out he gets pissed? Seriously?

Relax, he just said to see if you could come in later. Not really asking much.

That's why I never do any favors for Kroger anymore.  Come in on my day off? Nope.  Stay over? Nope.

It wasn't that he was asking, it was his attitude about the whole thing. I know like half the people on here have had the same issue with calling in before.

You're right. I hate it too, that going the extra mile gets so easily used against us but that's how some people are wired. I will do anything above and beyond what I'm required to, but when it comes to risking my life or others'? NOPE.

I once called off for snow and the manager told me "we'll see how badly we need you. I'll call you back." Uh, no? I was calling off. I informed her that either way I wasn't coming in and she got snippy with me. Sorry, I won't risk my life for Kroger.
