Is there anything in the employee handbook about maternity leave?

It should be under "leave of absence."

 

make sure you fill out all the paperwork and inform the union if they provide any benefits to you while you are off.

The Dept of Labor website says,  "Upon return from FMLA leave, an employee must be restored to his or her original job or to an equivalent job with equivalent pay, benefits, and other terms and conditions of employment. An employees use of FMLA leave cannot be counted against the employee under a no-fault attendance policy."

Make sure they don't use your maternity leave as an excuse to take your position away.
