Rules On Hair?

Im relatively new. Was hired janurary 1st.

I was never told any rules on hair. And I was wondering if there were any. And dont work for next few days to ask someone actually at work.

So is there any restrictions on hair? I ask because Im wanting to get black and pink in my hair. But I am not sure if such a bright colour as pink is allowed.

I know a customer service person recently died her hair red but was a darker red but I still wasnt so sure about a bright pink.

Look in your manual. I have dark hair and got bright red highlights in my hair and nobody said anything. I've seen several girls have highlights, but I have never seen pink. I'd ask somebody first before you spend the money on it. Highlights are WAY too expensive to just dye again within a day or so.

I was never actually given a manual to like take home none o us were. I guess we wee supposed to but only thing ever sent with me was some peices of paper needed to be brought back.

The only thing about dress codes they even spoke about was the shirts given to us black pants and black shoes and boys have to have shirts tucked in (so that doesnt include me lol)

But nothing ever said about hair.

I guess I will just have to ask one back to work if no one knows here XD

You're in a customer service driven job. Most places of business (not just Kroger, shockingly) frown on hair that is too out-there and things like facial piercings because it doesn't send the right message. If nobody likes their dress code (hair, piercings, etc. fall under that) then you don't have to work at that company that is holding you back from expressing yourself.

If it happens to still be relevant, my employee manual states that hair must be of a natural color.

I saw an employee a couple days ago have green streaks in her hair and apparently no one cared.

I don't think SayWhat meant that for her personally but *some* people could be offended.

Well I suppose it is okay. I went to work and asked multiple people. Cashiers, customer service and asked our front manager and male store manager they all seemed kind of confused at first and just kind of shook it off aying they dont know of any that any hair was fine. But Imma try out a wig of the hair i want first just in case they thing the pink is TOO bright .XDD

Yes i have a wig of what i want my real hair to be XD

I don't think we smell the same thing. Let me put this simply...you, as an employee, are representing the company. The company wants you to set forth a somewhat professional looking image. Since we don't wear suits, skirts and dress shoes, we wear a uniform and have a dress code which we are supposed to abide to. It's about company image. Quite frankly, I don't give a damn what people do to their bodies. I have tattoo's that are hidden unless I want to show them, and when I was younger, I had several piercings. When I was a store manager, I didn't care what my employees did on their time, as long as they represented the company in a positive manner, then that is what mattered. There were times I had to send someone home to change into work appropriate clothing because for some reason they couldn't figure it out on their own.

What color you dye your hair or what holes you put in your body isn't covered by the constitution. If an employer doesn't like it and it's against their dress code, then you can suffer the consequences if they feel like going down that road. Take those panties and untwist them. A dress code isn't stepping on anyones personal liberties.

Hmmmmm..................This really is a tricky and perplexing issue! We're talking about personal appearance codes that have always gone un spoken of and pretty much accepted. But as society as a whole changes, and the things that were once considered inappropriate and shocking are now increasingly becoming the norm, issues like the one in this thread are going to become ever hotly challenged.

Two Supreme Court rulings come to mind: One in 1984, where a 20 yr old guy with spiked hair won against an auto plant.

Then, in 1985 the rap group RUN DMC won in FLA against an indecency suit for their music; the dissenting judge screwed the pooch by saying "I don't need to define an obscenity, I know one when I see it!!!"
LOL~~~

You must maintain a professional appearance. My hair goes well below shoulder length, and I keep my beard trimmed to a goatee. I haven't had any issues with hair length, and I work in the Deli. It stays in the hairnet, and there are no problems.

I've known many people who've had issues, but they let their hair become unruly and outright disgusting. With greasy strips of hair sticking out from under their hat or putrid shades of green. Had it remained in a hair net (and hat), there wouldn't have been an issue but it was just out there.

I don't think so, I work in  grocery in a Kroger in Ga and I have teal/green mermaid hair and half of my hair is shaved off. It was this color during my interview and when I was hired. No problems at all. Actually I've received compliments on it.

Ive had teal/blue bangs before. The manual doesn't say anything about 'natrual' hair color, as long as your hair is neat and tidy plus they didn't really care either if my bangs were different; everyone seemed positive about it. I don't think hair color should be an issue either...personally. Ya it would be a shock to people for about a week or so then they get used to it.

At my store we have had several employees with random colored hair and no cared

If you are just doing highlights I don't think anyone will object.

I have seen employees at my Kroger have purple, blue, and red hair. But as soon as I died my hair blue, EVERYONE needs a talk about dress code. I was told by other employees that dying my hair an unnatural color is fine. My fault I didnt ask a manger, but why after I change it to blue then everyone has a problem with hair color?
