What's the difference between a courtesy clerk and a utility clerk? I heard some contracts give utility clerks raises and not courtesy clerks, but if both classifications do the same work, what would be the point of management hiring utility clerks?
But then why would any manager hire a utility clerk if a courtesy clerk can do the same job? Why not just make certain courtesy clerks clean for their shift but not make them utility clerks to avoid giving them a raise?
I don't think my store has utility clerks, there's a couple baggers I see cleaning the break room every once in a while but their main job is still bagger so I'm pretty sure they are courtesy clerks.

Because the cleaning tasks they are allowed to do only include:
-cleaning front end floors
-mopping spills
-sweeping sales floor
-can clean restrooms and break rooms
And as the contract states, "Everything above and beyond these duties will be considered a violation of the 'Courtesy Clerk Duties'" and thus a contract violation.
However, most/all stores have baggers who are technically classified as store clerks, and they can/are scheduled to do the utility shift on the regular utility clerks' off days.
at my store courtesy clerks do rotations as utility clerks throughout the week
It may be different under your contract then, but under mine, that would be a violation. Also though, keep in mind these "courtesy clerks" may actually be store clerks who bag and are treated for all intents and purposes as a courtesy clerk.

This is exactly the reason the store I work at doesn't have a "utility clerk" job title. The job of sanitation is assigned to the same people that hold the job title "courtesy clerk". We have courtesy clerks that have never done sanitation, we have courtesy clerks that are scheduled to be up front to bag/get carts some days while on other days, they may be scheduled to do sanitation. This way, the store can avoid having to give raises to these people while still paying them only minimum wage. Ultimately though, it's going to vary from store to store, and it probably depends (among other things) on the strength and quality of the union in that area.
Same thing, only cleaning is ALL the utility clerk does. Courtesy clerks can clean as well as bag. They get paid the same.
Then, what's the point of utility clerks? This still isn't making sense to me because I know in some contracts utility clerks get paid more than courtesy clerks but they do less. In those stores with contracts that allow utility clerks with higher wages, what's the point in management hiring people for that position if they'll have to pay them more? Do stores have to have utility clerks (if it's a position in a contract)?
What's not making sense? Utility clerks gather trash sweep clean restrooms etc. courtesy clerk bags and if something falls off the register and breaks like a jar of pickles the courtesy clerk gets it up or supposed to get it up because the utility clerk may be outside getting trash or may be cleaning the restroom where someone sh** on the floor. So the Utility clerk has to take a little more bull sh** than courtesy clerk because when someone does sh** on the floor the utility clerk gets it up while the courtesy clerk laughs. Now you get it?
