People that work for Kroger seem particularly good at finding hiding spots. I know of at least three people at the store I'm at that has spots they tiptoe off to when they get tired of being yelled at/bothered. I personally don't think it's a good idea because if you get caught, good luck explaining your way out of the situation you've put yourself in.

lol ya. good thing is the way to get to it is usually very dark with the lights off and once your in there you're actually pretty safe. just a dark crawlspace/tiny room with a lid on top, nothing but pipes and levers inside.  lol i can peep my head out the hatch like a turtle and make sure the coast is clear. biggrin

One guy at our store hides behind the coke machines. Usually only works if you're in a position where they are not expected to see you all the time. I used to hide too.

Same.  My legs hurt so bad and the people in my department take forever to go on their breaks, and we have to go in the order we came in so one person can hold everyone up. So when the pain gets too bad I just go to the bathroom and sit for a while.

restroom breaks are quite common, i've seen people go out to the picnic table outside and just smoke. My store is just too tiny to have very many areas to hide inside the store, mostly it's just people "going out for carts" and not coming back in for a while.

 THIS ^........

I don't care if you're only making a nickle a year----You understood the pay scale when you chose to hire on. It's a J O B, and there is work to be done! Yep Imma bitch about this for a second, because it's this kind of attitude taking over the entire country like a disease.

It's getting more common for me to go to a fast food restaurant and watch the counter help duck into the kitchen like ferrets. What do they really think they're there for, to stand around on their cel phones and flirt with each other???

Yeah, work SUCKS. I'm the first to agree. But if I want to better my situation, it's on me to do that. If I want a raise or a better position or fuller benefits, I need to step up my game and earn those things. What I'm not willing to face in the mirror is the fact that I instead chose to whine and cry and bitch because the bossy man wanted me to actually earn my pay check.

nocturnia...that was beautiful. Thank you. The OP here is the same as the deli person that ducks out for 45 minutes in the other thread. When you duck out and disappear, someone else has to pick up your slack. Be it on the same shift, or on another shift.

Everyone doesn't get paid enough to do a lot of the crap we have to do, but you do it. Because that's what being a grown-up is. Doing crap you don't like doing.

Bro, if I worked with you it would be hard not to knock your teeth in. The most offensive part is that you are so happy to hide.  Been on the wrong end of this nonsense from plenty of folks.  Have you tried to do your job such that management does not need to come tell you what to do so often?  I suspect not, as your response to difficulty is literally to hide in a hole.

If the work is not worth it, find a new job.  If you are not qualified for a better job, might want to get on that.

In the meanwhile, quit hiding or give your two weeks notice.

Well, everyone has gripes about their jobs. Me too, definitely. But someone bragging about how they're hiding on their dead ass while other people are busting theirs? UH-UH. And as far as this crap I'm always hearing of "Well, they don't pay me enough, blah-blah....", there's a very old, but very true saying for that:

"You can make money or you can make excuses.....But you can't make both."

I was just thinking this. You found a place to hide for a while? How nice for you.  Meanwhile, someone else in your department would probably love to take an extra break and sit down and relax, and yet they're still out there doing what they're supposed to be doing...and more, because they're doing the job for your lazy butt too.  Selfish jerk.

I blame you.  People like you make everyone else's jobs harder.  They don't get paid extra to take up your slack.  You're stealing from them and your employer.

They got paid what you got paid until they got a raise by staying with the company longer.

I blame management. They let these people slack off and let others do more than their fair share of work with no extra pay.

While I would agree with you initially, you have to take into consideration that some people are more than willing to spend more time and effort getting out of work than they would actually spend doing the work itself. They also figure out ways to make it seem like they were there working the whole time. So, while there are definitely managers who let these people slack and expect others to pick up the extra work, just as often the bosses can be unaware that a problem exists at all.

However, regardless of which situation it falls under, the person slacking never avoids blame.

Management doesn't always catch them. We had one grocery clerk that kept from getting caught on all of his marathon breaks until he got caught sitting in the break room for an hour and a half watching the Super Bowl. It will catch up with people, management just has to be able to catch them and do something about it.

He didn't get fired, BTW. But he got demoted down to cashier.

It turns out that the roof ladder is actually wired to call the police department when used.  Who'd have thunk it?

**** all you haters! Kroger is a ****ty job and I will gain my work ethic and self discipline somewhere else! I won't do it for minimum wage, being bitched at, not getting my break until the 7th hour of my 8 hour shift. Yea I hide, yea I take my time when I do carts. Oh the poor managers have to come bag for me for 15 minutes? Boo hoo, when they got promoted they knew they had to pick up for other jobs in the store, it is like part of the job. For me? I get treated like ****, so if I want a break cause my back and legs hurt, i'll take one myself.

Uh, I think more people are concerned about your fellow workers who have the same job as you having to pick up the slack, not the managers.

Totally forgot i posted this. i should clear a few things up. During my shift, i am the ONLY one replenishing things. Before i go to "hide" all of my work is caught up and finished for atleast 15-30 mins. I hide because i am making minimum wage to throw pallet upon pallet of water and dog food onto the shelves. After a while that **** gets heavy and you get tired. You cannot sit here with a straight face and tell me you would remain on the floor after throwing 3 pallets of water and 2 pallets of 50lb dog food in under an hour for minimum wage. I get tired of everytime i get completely knocked out by the heavy **** in the store i get managers coming by wondering why i am working so slow. HELLO did you not just see me throw 1500lbs worth of product on the shelf?!?!?!?! If you pay minimum wage, you get minimum work, plain and simple. Im not ****ing anybody over by hiding. my work is caught up and as far as im concerned if they want me to do more they need to pay me more, i already do enough the way it is!

If someone's forcing you to work at Kroger you should contact the authorities.

I might as well be forced to work here. This town has 20k people total and this store is like the main employer for the entire town. there is nowhere else to work unless you have spent your entire life working on a farm or on an oil rig. Besides, people like you i just want to slap "oh no-one is forcing you to work here.". Bitch this is the only place to work! They know it to, and their wages show it. At one time they treated their employees so badly the entire town was in an uproar, they had a city meeting over it and everything, because this store IS THE ONLY MAJOR EMPLOYER in this entire town. Next your going to tell me to move to a better place. No, why dont you move here if you think its so good? Do you have the money to move my ass somewhere? 'cus i sure as hell dont. not on minimum wage.
