Okay, drinks and snacks have been banned from the registers. Cashiers absolutely cannot eat or drink at the register. Not water, not anything. Several of us have brought doctors notes regarding staying hydrated, and still turned down and told that we cannot have water at the register. I understand chips and pop...pop can be sticky and customers don't want to see you shovel pretzels into your mouth or have your greasy fingers scanning food. I understand, but not even bottled/capped water is not allowed at the register.
The front office continues to keep their drinks in the office. I saw a supervisor with a pop from McDonalds walking over to her post the other day. I would be lying if I said I wasn't completely outraged at the fact that while we remain thirsty (talking to customers does not help) and have to hide WATER to keep it safe from being thrown away, other people are exempt from this rule because they created it. Even people who have been there decades are confused by this new rule. Someone will go on break and a manager will come and poke around their register looking for something to confiscate. It's ridiculous.
Water is a necessity. You can't make someone be thirsty for hours at a time. Is there anything I can do about this? When I asked the manager he said it was a board of health issue, and upon googling it, I found that we would not be allowed water only if we worked in the bakery, deli, or meat department.
thats actually true you cant have water if you handle or package food but i go to several stores all the time to help out(im a "floater") and have only heard them tell the cashiers to hide their drinks. If you have adoctors note then they cant deny you that. Have you talked to management? talk to them first and the as an ablsolute last resort... call union.
thats weird. i think its just your csm being a jerk. they act like that when they feel they are losing controll over you guys.
Stupid rules on no water!!! I work on the grocery night crew and about four years ago we had a store manager that kept a igloo ice chest filled with kroger bottled water next to the courtesy booth for the day time baggers to keep them hydrated during the summer months and they let us night stockers drink them also. That store manager was smart maybe Kroger should insitute that nationwide having water at the booth for the employees.
I don't care I am a big guy and I need water. I keep it in my back pocket. I dare some one to grab it. That will be the last thing they grap in their life. Doctore excuse or not. Water is a bodly fluid. You gain go days with out food but not water.
We had this fight in the deli over the last two years. We used to have a box in the cooler for us to put our drinks in. We got a new manager who wasn't happy about that and she made us get rid of it and told us no drinks. So everyone started hiding their drinks. Eventually they relented and let us have our drink box back.
drinks and snacks are banned on my front end too. doesn't mean people comply. but the hypocrisy is there. i threw out a fast food drink cup at the service desk that belonged to my FEM.
HA at my kroger we eat and drink at the registers, whatever we want. The baggers, the cashiers, the managers, everyone. Soda, water, gum, the other day a cashier brought homemade fudge.

I don't think anyone is saying to go days without water. Perhaps a slight exaggeration?
I saw a bagger chugging choc milk out of a gallon jug the other day while there was stuff coming down the belt towards him. That's pretty damn gross. Time and a place, but the FE is no place for a gallon of anything being drank. Get a bottle that isn't obnoxious. THAT is the crap management has a problem with and those are the people who ruin it for everyone else.

Exactly. If more people excercized common sense and public decency, we wouldn't have to come down with these blanket-spread, one size fits all rules. At my store it's kind of a don't ask/don't tell thing; keep a tactfully stashed bottle of water under the counter, sip on it occasionally, no probs.
Had to coach and eventually fire a young gal for slopping down Cool Ranch Doritos and audibally slurping from bottles of Yohoo. WOW did she come off like a wallowing swamp pig.
You do get breaks don't you? Surely you can go two or three hours without having to take a drink. I worked as cashier for nearly five years and no one even thought of having water or whatever to sip on at their register. It simply wasn't done. They do however provide a cooler and water for the baggers who have to go out and get carts in the summer heat, but that's different. You're not going to get dehydrated just standing in a checklane.

thank you Anon! I totally agree. Go open up your own damn grocery store and you can make the rules to have water allowed at the front end. until then - shut the hell up about it.
