What if you want LESS hours?

I just got hired and was given 34.5 hours my first week. I told them my availability was open, but that doesn't mean that I want to work that many hours. Can I specify that I only want say 20 to 25 hours a week? I don't care what days or times, I just want less hours.

Yes, but be careful what you wish for.

Here's some helpful advice:

Depending on your contract, they probably aren't allowed to give you more hours than a certain number (usually either 28 hours or 32 hours). The only way they can is through mutual consent. If this is in your contract, all you have to do is say that you do not consent. This way, you can keep a lot of hours without pissing people off as much.

Keep in mind though! You're a new hire. I just hope you know what that entails. I hope your managers/supervisors are nice people.

if you restrict your availability in any way they don't have to give you any hours at all. be very careful about what you do.

I would suggwst waiting until your probationary period is over before making any kind of stink.

Yes they are right. It's almost summertime now and usually they hire a bunch of people to work, you could wait until they do, but if you ask to work less hours they may be mad because they would rather have people that want all the hours they can get at this time.  If you ask for less hours that means theyll have to hire another person or give someone else all the hours and that will probly turn out bad for you. it's strange that someone would want less hours at kroger. They hardly ever give anybody more than 32 hours unless you have full time status.

When I was hired, on the sheet where you specific availability you also listed how many hours you're willing to work a week.

We didn't have that option. I put down that my availability was from 6 AM-11 PM with no specific days I needed off. But when they said that the job was part-time, I had no idea it would be close to 35 hours a week!

They have been hiring a lot, even since I was hired. But I think they hire a lot of college students who have limited availability.

I don't want so many hours because I have family obligations, plus I'm a freelance writer on the side. Working 34 hours a week, especially nights, makes it hard for me to do anything else.
