Calling in sick
Permalink

Hi everyone,

I'm a relatively new employee at Kroger, but past my probationary period-I can tell because they gave me my pay raise for having previous cashier work.  Towards the end of my shift I started feeling super itchy on the back of my knees (I know, it's weird) and now I have raised bleeding skin rashes my knees and a fever.  I told a fellow friend/cashier that if it gets worse I will probably call off tomorrow to go see a doctor because this is uncomfortable and I don't know if it is contagious.  She said I can't call off because she is going to in order to attend a party (as we all know there are some celebrations for Cinco de Mayo this weekend) and the store will be too short of cashiers if I call off.  Is this a matter of who calls off first?  I don't really think I can be "forced" to do my shift in this state and I'm hoping that getting a doctors note will at least let my managers know that I'm not lying and just partying like she is.  I think the worst possible penalty I can face right now with the note is a verbal warning, which is okay because I rarely if ever get sick so I probably won't be calling off again anytime soon.  Do you think this is a correct assumption?

Technically, you should request a day off a week ahead. Days off are by seniority.

Now, you could call in the day of work and tell them you're sick. If they're nice, it should end there. If they're sticklers, you better have a doctor's note.

First of all, a fellow cashier can't tell you when you can or can't call in sick.  Second, never tell anyone you're thinking about calling in.   If you do, then they'll know you're lying when you call in "sick".

Thanks for the replies :) as for not telling anyone about calling sick because then people will know I'm "lying", I'm not lying and the note ought to prove it.

Call and ask to speak to a co-manager. As long as you're giving more than a two hour notice and don't have a history of missing work, I don't think you'll face any sort of a penalty, unless you have some really inhuman co-managers/store manager. Having a doctor's note does help, so if you do go to see one, definitely get one. I'm no doctor, but if you have the means to see one, I would, just because seeing one now might help you to get better sooner so that you don't risk ending up missing multiple days of work should your condition worsen.

If you have to call off and have a legit excuse then do it. If you have a doctors note to prove it all the better. Anyone who tells you otherwise can stuff it.

I hope you get better soon!

Go to the doctor and get a note from them. Also take a picture of the area so you have proof there is a real issue. As for your fellow cashier if she calls out sick just to attend a party that is a lot worse then you calling out for being sick.
