Someonewhere on this forum their is a thread asking what the difference is. A courtesy clerk can wear shorts. A Utility Clerk cannot. A courtesy Clerk goes to the can and hides for 30 minutes every hour. A utility clerk has to stop what he is doing like getting trash sewwping ot whatever picking up the slacker's job on the toliet while getting behind on other important duties (someone has to do the trash you know) I know this does not go on in all stores and I am sorry if I offended someone (Like Bag Boy) this is NOT geared toward you. You sound like a pretty cool dude. To tell you the trueth anyone goes and bashes me. Let me explain about myself. I am almost 40. I have been with Kroger almost 20 years. I am a utility clerk. Please do not look down on me. I am not able to work full time. I have health problems. I do het goverment help to help me out on my needs like bill's etc. There is nothing I wish for more than to be able to work full time. But for some reason and I am pretty sure it's a good reason God chose to make me special. I will also say atleast I am not sitting at home on my butt living off the government. There may come a day when I am not able to work at all. But right now I can work and I am proud to have a job. It gets rough sometimes like every job will. I just thought I would share this. And those things I shared in the first few lines goes on alot at my store. Oh and one more thing I just thought of a courtesy clerk my get called "Courtis Clark" by some blue haired dragon lady. One time a bagger left a lady's milk or somthing at the register. She called back and said "Courtis Clark bagged my grocries and took them out. Our nametags used to have courtesy clerk on them.

Hi, this is the maker of the original topic mentioned.
I asked about it here on the forum because I was interested in the position. As a matter of fact, I just did recently became a utility clerk.
From my personal experience, the main difference is that a utility clerk has less micro-management and can tag. We basically just clean around the store until someone asks for our help.
Anyhow, good for you TC. I just wish more people would do what you do.
P.S.
I have not seen blue-haired dragon ladies at my store =D
These titles are stupid. A courtesy clerk is a bagger and a utility clerk is a janitor.
Those titles may be stupid, but it's what gives Kroger an excuse to not have to give raises to Courtesy Clerks or pay a Utility Clerk janitorial pay. If your Kroger is like my Kroger, then utility clerks don't even exist - the job of cleaning is assigned to Courtesy Clerks, who again never get raises.
This is how Kroger ensures that corporate bigwigs/store managers maintain bloated salaries and get fat bonuses while the rest of us - the ones actually taking care of the customers - are lucky enough to get by paycheck to paycheck. So for Kroger, it's smart, not stupid.
