Smith's - Kroger company...

Hi all,

I do not work for Kroger but my wife does for around 11 years, I am baffled at how they expect someone to work an 8 hour shift with only ONE 15 minute break and no lunch (paid or not paid whatever). I'm no VP or anything but our work provides us a 1 hour lunch and two 15 minute breaks...

I called the policy number and...well...lets just say they didn't have anything for me...I would think a GIANT company like this would have something in regards to lunch/break rules.

I am asking this because my wife is now pregnant and if I don't figure something out someone is going to die and I hope its not me  :'(

For 8 hours, you're supposed to get 2 15 minute breaks (or 1 30 minute break in some places).

check the union contract if there is one.  where i am it says one uninterrupted 15 min break per four hours.  we usually string those together for people doing 8 hour shifts.  sometimes it doesn't work out.  i'll give myself a 15 min... or none... to make sure i get everyone else's break in.  one night i was there 9 hours and i had to fight just to get 15 minutes.  things happen.

Depending what state you live in it is REQUIRED to take your breaks lunch. Company policy or not

As said above, according to most common state laws in the work place, you should be given a 15 minute break per every 4 hours.

Where I work for 8 hours, it is two 15s, or one 30 minute.

When in doubt, address your concerns with the Union Steward - they are typically the most friendly people you will know in retailers, that care about you, and your job, and wellbeing while at the company.

Unions are around to help workers voice their troubles, especially in cases of a promotion struggle, too many hours scheduled, favoritism, etc...
