My friend was suspended today for accsessing personal files. They were his own, and he didn't touch anyone else's. he wanted to look up past write ups, discussions etc. well management came in and suspended him right there. EVEN if the files were his he should NOT have gotten them. The managers will let you look at your file IF and ONLY IF they are there. (Too many write ups go "missing" out of the file if not supervised. Well my friend is not to happy with this but he brought it on himself. Now I know write ups last about 6 months from date issued then are null and void (unless you go into arbitration then they reactivate themselves to as if they were freshly written to be used against you) how long do suspension paperwork last? 6 month like write ups or do they follow you as long as you are able to work?
Company files are company property, and your friend was rightfully suspended for accessing them without a manager there. Write ups stay in the file for the time period specified by the contract, read it and it will tell you. Occasionally a write up can stay in their longer under agreement with the union and company, but that employee is told of this and understands it. Write up's do come back however to prove the point that the employee has been given warning and several chances to correct the behavior addressed in the write up.
