Working off the clock!

OK I'm a back up of the Deli, yesterday I got a call from an employee asking me about the fryer. She said I called the head deli and she didn't answer so I'm calling you. I was fine with that. I answered and helped her fix the fryer over the phone. The head deli lady found out that I worked off the clock, bitched me out first thing and said if I did it again I would get wrote up. WTF is wrong with people. My time and they (Kroger/Union) don't pay my cell bill. I feel as a backup to help the girls and to let them know they can call me anytime day and night. I would rather them call me and fix the problem then for them to let it go and cost the deli money which decreases the amount of hours for all the girls. What are your opinions on the situation? Would you have done the same thing or would you have said no I'm off the clock can't help ya?

NEVER WORK OFF THE CLOCK.

Your work ethic is commendable, but YES, you can be FIRED for doing that. Not just at Kroger, but any where. It's a work place liability issue.

I can understand if I was in street clothes and walked in and started frying chicken or stocking shelves but it was just a 5 min phone call....no....

Calling and talking to someone isn't working off the clock.

My department manager told me when i first started, if I EVER had a problem feel free to call her. I've had to a couple times. she's sorted out the issue. Just last week our new lady called me because of a minor problem, I told her how to fix it. No problem. I don't care if anyone needs to call me for that. It's not working off the clock and your department head sounds batsh*t crazy.

I will follow by the rules:...One day I will be shopping after work in uniform of course, a customer will say something like "Where is the peanut-butter?" I'm sorry sir I can't help you I'm off the clock. The customer sees me as rude calls the hotline and complains. Then what?.....I say Sorry you told me that if I worked off the clock I would get wrote up and not to do it......

Answering the phone and telling the employee how to fix a given situation is not working off the clock. Going in and physically doing it with them while off the clock is.

And as for customers, if I am shopping and off the clock I "pretend" to not hear them as I have my earbuds in listening to music.

"For questions that require an immediate answer, call another store."

So instead of calling your department head, who can possibly fix the problem right away, call another store, where, if your store isn't a brand new one, you might have different equipment from that store. So, if you call them they'll think, why the f are you calling me?

Wow... I don't even know what to say to that, but that is one of the most moronic things I've ever heard.

Take your name tag off. It makes you stand out, you look like an employee when you wear it. Take it off and people might think twice before they ask, and if they do, you can ignore them because they don't know your name thus having no ammo to use against you.

Now with our new stand out Walmart uniform that's all the ammo they need....I still answer questions on or off the clock to our customers I was just using that comment as an example of working off the clock...:)

There are two references to working off the clock here: The title, and part of the text. I'm addressing both here again, for a sec.

I mean....You said it yourself. TWICE. You were working off the clock!! You know that's a no-no, and more to protect you than anyone else.

Also: You've by your own admission had every level of authority in your store but the butcher, baker and candlestick maker T E L L YOU it's wrong to do that. But yet you slam your fists against the posts and still insist you see no ghosts.

At this point it's like you're driving down a high way with every one coming straight AT you and blaring their horns, and you're flipping them off and screaming "ASS H$$$$$!!!"

Y E S : You were right. Ethically AND morally correct in what you did, and where you come from wanting to help fellow employees and customers. But at this point, I merely ask you: At what cost? Your job? Think about this from the company's view, not yours. You'll make more money. PEACE~~~

Yeah, this post made me think about little things I might do in the store.

Yesterday I saw two very small puddles of water in the produce area.  Not a huge mess but definitely an accident waiting to happen if the wrong person came along.  I was off the clock.  Would have taken me 30 seconds to clean it up and throw trash away.  I had to really fight the urge to grab a few paper towels and clean it up.

If I mention it to customer service, they will think I am being bossy and I will look like the bad guy.  I left the puddles and left the store.

I so want to post some of the drama our store has but a lot of stuff is best dealt with internally.  What happens in Kroger, stays in Kroger!  I have already shared a few tidbits that someone from the store would recognize.

Just make sure you are out of uniform. Any customer should be able to see if you are pushing a cart with earbuds in is off the clock. Especially when you aren't supposed to wear them on the sales floor on duty

IF that's really "the rules" we're working off the clock all the time in my dept and store.  dept head and backup both tell us to call them with questions / problems.

one day we had an employee bbq and the store manager requisitioned me to carry stuff.  i was off that day and stopped by for the food.  i've never worked an hourly job so i didn't know any better.  one of the dept heads saw me and asked if i was on the clock or off, i was off so she got someone else to do what she needed.

training in my dept gives us paperwork to take home.  a class at division said we're not saying work off the clock. read this during your break time, borrow extra hours from other depts.  to 'pay' for the time you need to get it done. ha-ha.  that doesn't work when you're talking to full time people.

I understand your point and it is not worth me losing my job over. My husband and I just took out a mortgage for our home and I have two kids...infant and teenager. I will play by the book...Thanks for your advice and everybody's too..

geez this is exactly the stupid silly Kroger mentality that has gotten this company a bad rap.  Well hell - if they don't want people to call you then fine. F*ck it.  Just let the stuff go broken and call the manager to let them know.  What moronic imbeciles

I always wear a t-shirt underneath my work shirt so when I clock out my work shirt comes off, but when customers see me come out of the office they immediately know I work there and constantly ask me questions. When the managers are standing right there they just look at me like 'if you don't answer them I'll write you up' so what am I supposed to do? Break the rules and answer them or don't answer them and get a write up?? OMG!!!

I always "pass the buck" so to speak. Like if someone says 'where's the salt?' I ask a passing co worker where the salt is and go on my way. If they respond with 'don't you know where it is?' Ill just say I'm off the clock. (Then think) *so do your d*** job and tell them! I'm going home*

No you should be the one transferring. I have no idea how you seem to have gotten the idea that they are doing you a favor by letting you work off the clock. What you are actually doing is doing them a favor by working for free. And it most definitely against the rules as it is ILLEGAL!
