I was/am a bagger. I was 5th on the seniority list and then I left for college, so I had to quit. They never mentioned a leave, so I didn't bother. But, my manager said they would welcome me back if I didn't get an internship with my career. Fast forward 8 months, and I was rehired back at Kroger. Didn't have to get trained again or take the computer classes. I, however, trained someone my first day.
I was put on the bottom of the baggers' list sadly. Is there anyway I can change this or because I quit, it is mandatory that they put me there? I assume that is the case, but I though I would ask just in case.
You know that it goes by hire date. You quit and were re-hired, thus you got a new hire date. They didn't have to mention leave because it's all there in your handbook. They can't change your seniority, you are where you're at. Next time, do things different when you leave for the school year.
Actually, they can change your seniority. Happened to a guy I used to work with. He worked for kroger in another state, quit, then moved here a couple months later and got rehired. He fought for his seniority and they gave it to him. I don't think it was fair, but I don't make those calls.
This is kinda like the question Dude asked, re vacation pay. There's 'policy'........and then there's reality, which is: It really comes down to convincing a good manager to help you out on something. It CAN be done.
I don't think you can take a leave for school, there are specific reasons for leave and the time that the leave is good for, and school is not one of them. If you don't have any hours in a time period, and I think it is six weeks the system automatically terminates you. I had people come back and work every 4 or 5 weeks just for a day to keep their seniority with the company. Look your handbook under leave and it will explain it all.
The one poster is correct that if you can get your manager to go to bat for you he can probably bridge your time, however at the same token is it really worth the manager time to spend all this time and energy if your not planning on staying with the company? I had many a clerk come back and just work for a holiday or the summer and they were always welcome if they were a good employee, just as in your situation.
If hours are the concern, you can probably pick up enough hours from people calling in to make up what you would have gotten if you had kept your seniority. Let your managers know your available for call in and when they call show up, and you will have the reputation of the person to call. Too many people complain that they don't have enough hours, but when they get called in, suddenly they can't work.

Not true at all. It is called an educational leave and people do it here all the time. It is in the contract, as well.
I've never done it myself--yet--but I'm telling you, it does happen. In all situations.
I think it's ****ty. Let's give everyone a first place ribbon too! If you quit, fight back up through the ranks again like everyone else is doing. Too many handouts, and for what? Someone who is going to quit anyways? P!ss on that. It's not a good investment.
