Just wondering how the Union and Kroger (since they both bargain the contract) can justify the fact that every associate starts out at minimum wage, even though the job responsibilities are so different. For example, a deli clerk who has to run the slicer, bake chicken in the oven, fry chicken in the fryer, take them all apart and clean them, etc., as apposed to someone who bags your groceries?? Your thoughts?
At my store, baggers start off at minimum wage, but anyone else starts off with 60 cents more. According to the contract, however, everyone should start out at minimum wage.
To put this another way, the manager has the power to make things happen despite what the contract says.
in ATL division baggers make minimum, the rest start at a nickel more. after that it doesn't matter how much responsibility you have you only make more money by getting your time-based raises unless you move to backup or dept head.
In midsouth starting pay is a bit higher than minimum wage normally, but working at a marketplace store, all employees (except courtesy clerks iirc) get an extra dollar an hour.
so does this mean that the union contract is different in every city/state or region? When the union and the company bargain, is it a nationwide contract or does each area/state bargain differently?
It's a different contract for every local. For example, I am in local 1995. Our contract is between the UFCW local 1995 and kroger's midsouth and atlanta divisions. It is not based solely on state lines and each local bargains separately.
I just started working at Kroger 2 weeks ago in over night grocery. Upon hiring and training I was offered $10.50 + 25. No one EVER told me I would be starting an over night shift with a day time minimum wage salary. Its bad enough that I only work part time. I was making more money on unemployment then I do working for Kroger. How do u explain the deception?! During training Kroger gives one impression, but when its actually time to work, things don't even come close to what the training has taught. This is a good way to create disgruntled employees. How would u explain that?

Welcome to the Kroger Circus. Get your popcorn and cotton candy at the front gate.
It is a lack of communication and common at most corporate businesses.
