I am a part time employee with over 5 years with Kroger. I want a Night Grocery manager bid.
Why do I want the job? I draw a blank but want to say, " I want full time status and the payrate!"
I do not know enough of the lingo for Key Retailing. I could also use pointers on how to prepare for an interview. I have had 2 interviews for similar positions. One I was passed up due to senority. The last one, I think I had 3 years more senority but failed the interview by not conveying my ability. I am confident I could run a night crew with low drama.
I am back up for one week out of the year. I am backup every Sunday night and run a crew of 1. I know how to and do run backstock review. I do the order review/write order on Sunday nights. I recieve all deliveries made overnight on Sunday.
What do I know about Key Retailing? How do I answer that question? We have always conditioned the store. I have always checked my BOHs after running stock since I started. I do not know how to print a report for holes. I have filed and prepared new tsgs. I have seen the ddp worksheet but the day manager takes care of that. We do not run stock off pallets at the moment tho I know we are supposed to. My night manager is bucking the system. Can anyone describe how that works for them workflow wise? How do they deal with product in other aisles and backstock? I can get twice as much done when it is spotted on the floor and make up for the time spent spotting product. Is there anything else I should educate myself about Key Retailing?
I have never written a schedule but sure I could figure it out if given 3 previous schedules and everyones preferred days off. We have not started the new auto scheduling yet.
How would I deal with slackers? Well, I am easy going but don't like people making everyone else pick up someone elses slack. Some people are just not able to work as fast as others. Some people have off days where they can't get a workflow going. Do I give warnings and write-ups or does the manager? What is the best way to assign tasks? By ability or rotate to give everyone a change in scenery?
Any other suggestions welcome. I can't run. I am at Kroger for the long run.
Chances are they wont give it to you just because there are full timers going for the position. Full timers usually get seniority over all part timers. Also in most unions Grocery managers are no longer covered by union.

Seniority is irrelevant if they decide he is the most qualified. There can be 10 more senior FT employees interviewing for the job, but if the least senior, part-time, employee is the most qualified, they can be given the position, and it would be the smarter choice anyway.
Honestly just have a good relationship with those who can make the call. Be willing to learn, and show that you want to, and have a desire to advance. I witness first hand how detrimental(or positive) a relationship with superiors can be. You don't need to kiss ass, just work hard and stand out above the rest. All of the traits needed for a good department head can be learned easily with time for anyone with the desire and initiative to learn. Having worked in night grocery for the last 5+ years, I can say I would much prefer having backup to the actual department head. Having to deal with all of the big wigs that come in and attend all of the meetings during the hours in which you're normally asleep would kill me.
