Do I really want to be a manager?

Was offered a position as a department lead/non-salary manager.

I've been working at a Kroger family store (Fry's) for 10 months in a few days and my manager just quit. The assistant store manager called me one early morning and said "We have a job position and your manager suggested you over every one else. Do you want it? It pays $13.50/hr...it is $5.40 more /hr than you make now in case you were wondering."

No panel interview yet, and it has been 3 weeks already. Still getting paid $8.05 and the bs is already stupid and nearly not worth the pay increase. lol (even with back pay for an already 107 hours so far.)

I wonder what would be said if I put my two weeks in right now...it was already on my mind before I was given the opportunity to become manager. honestly...I'm thinking about it. I was closing for 9 weeks straight after one person was fired, and another quit...9 weeks straight of closing... one day off a week and getting roughly 40 hours. if I got two days off, it was working 8 days, one day off, working 5 days and another day off. I was the lowest on the list and I felt like dying. In fact, I sent out 5 applications and got called for 3 of them. Not feeling this position or job any more.

This is all I have to say

no

even if you're going to leave, at least do the interview for the experience.

it sounds like you might not want the responsibility for lead which i assume would be full time.

i get what you're saying and how you feel physically.  doing full time hours or OT spread over 6, 7 or more days with no days off is hard.  i've been there.  done that.

however doing full time 8 hrs a day with "two" days off is not easy in this job either.  some shifts seem endless and they're agonizingly painful.  if the schedule writer sucks, sometimes you end up doing a quick turn around of closing then opening.

also, depending on your dept, a 'day off' might really mean the day off is the day you just worked til dawn.  some of it depends on your availability and dept though.

me, personally, i'd be happy to take the money.

Here's what you should consider: Why did your dept.mgr. quit? If it was because it was an unfixable, scapegoat situation then them offering it to you is just an emergency bandaid on their part. The money sounds nice but if you're being setup to fail and it sure sounds like you are then if you have any better situation to move on to you best go to it. As a dept. mgr. you are responsible 24/7 for your area- a lot of stress and anxiety since you don't have a reliable crew. As far as days off in retail- Dream On!- the business demands that work comes first everyday. So forget any R&R, family time during holidays, no weekends off, you will have to cover vacant shifts especially closing shifts. They aren't doing you any favors by promoting you before you're fully trained and knowledgeable. And would the other crew members be resentful because you got promoted around them? You bet they will!
