I heard it was illegal for them to have only one person to clear the lot at night by themselves, however our Kroger's only has one bagger past 10. Is it really illegal? I feel incredibly uncomfortable going out there by myself when it's around 11-12
I don't live in an area where I would have to worry about it, but I'm sure some locations can be in very dangerous parts of towns that you wouldn't want to be alone.
Why would it be illegal. If you are In a dangerous part of town ask for the security guard and some walkie talkies.
kroger springs for guards? walkie talkies? they would rather you be killed and replaced than protect you. if you feel uncomfortable don't do it. plain and simple.

In our ghetto stores in the Cincy/Dayton division there are uniformed cops that work in the stores. They will escort people to their cars if they so desire. If store815 talked about it then apparently they do this in the Columbus division.
Yeah.. we definitely don't have Security guards. Luckily I live in a decent area, I still feel uncomfortable being only one girl out there alone for an hour.

try getting things done by 10pm so you don't have to do a lot of clearing after that time. If you keep on top of it it should be fine. Do you have night crew there at the time? ask one of them to come out with you.

Conceal pepper spray on you. The pocket kind. If someone tries something when clearing lots you have something for defense. Or if you feel real uncomfortable, leave the rest of the carts where they are. The carts will be there come morning when the store opens. Human life is MORE important than gathering carts.
At my store, we send 2 people out together at night to clear the lot and bring in the rest of the carts so no one is out there alone. Our store is pretty small too so I would ask whoever is in charge to send someone out with you.

I would ask management about that first. It would be wiser to do so than have someone who isn't familiar with the product to use it and cause the company or themselves a lawsuit. Or worse, blind someone, because it can happen.
If you don't feel comfortable doing it, go to management, explain your concerns, and have them either get some one to accompany you------or go out with you themselves.
Mega-Kitteh is right: There is nothing in retail worth endangering your life over.

losing your job is better than being raped.

i can't imagine it being illegal unless there's some local ordinance. i'd rather send two people out but most of the time i don't have them. BagBoy is right, try to stay on top of it so there isn't so much to bring in and you'll be fine. Some times it gets out of hand.

If that is a concern, then do not go out into the parking lot to clear carts by yourself. Talk to the managers and find a solution. When I was in management I always stressed to everyone that they can come to me with anything, but come to me with a solution, not just problems. They will be much better received that way.
I'm a female that worked at on the backside of horse racetracks in Detroit and other major cities, being raped or worse was always a concern. BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. When I walk out into the parking lot I know who is out there and I constantly scan my surroundings. I will f*ck someone up if they tried to mess with me.

If you're going to carry pepper spray or anything else like that, I suggest you bone up on local and state laws. Just because there's no local law about it, does not mean there's no state law. The toughest law always supersedes any other laws.
I work at a store in a pretty rough suburb of Atlanta. I have a bagger on the lot till 12 but we actually do have walkie talkies and a security gaurd. We also stay busy till 3am so they're never alone.
