New - Are managers allowed to join the union?

Nope, one of my store's former department heads is now in co-manager training right now. And department heads are part of the union.

Rumor has it that if you ever want to go into management at Kroger that you are not allowed to be in the union. Rumor also has it that once you're in the union, you can NEVER get out, which means you will never be considered for management.

Does anyone know if this is this true? I would hate to sign a piece of paper saying that I will never be higher than the donkey level.

That's not true. Our former ARM was promoted from a cashier into her position, one of our former co-mgr's was a produce clerk. I went from a union position to a non-union position.

It's only the union. Not a gang. You don't get jumped in (only a hefty initiation fee) and blood doesn't have to be shed to get out. Whoever told you this is fear mongering and also an idiot.

Managers are nonunion. If you become a manager you can no longer be part of the union. You can be promoted to manager... however unlikely as that may become (kroger does not like to promote hourly employees to management they would rather hire a fresh out of college upstart with a god complex).

Plus managers are expected to be 1000% in support of the store right or wrong. During contract negotiations they are not permitted to side with the employees, they MUST side with the store. Glad I'm not manager... The crap I see that goes on...

Amen to that. I used to do relief management at my first store. The way the corporate environment was back then, I would have considered going into management. Now, however, it's so different that I wouldn't even think about it at all.

There are actual training seminars that teach you how to psychologically manipulate employees. How to deliberately talk down to them, dehumanize them, bend and twist them to the company's will. I've been to a few of these wretched things.

Can't wait til I can afford to be OUT of this 'profession'.

Actually had an argument about this with somebody at my store. They thought they were on the fast-track to store management, and I explained that they all but say directly "Nay, hourly man, ye wilt not obtain management from your loathsome position." This was as I had a copy of that great people newsletter in my hand about their "college outreach" program, trying to get fresh graduates into management to help us become more "dynamic" and "think outside the box" and other general nonsense.

Edit: Hey Nocturnia, that is wicked. I feel like I need to go research this just to resist it more actively. Guess I always knew it was there, just not so active. Thanks for being a decent human being about such thing instead of "Yay, new toolbox to coerce the people under me."
