Why Do Employees Stay At Kroger?

It's really not that great of a job unless you are a manager and then you are probably only still making 15 bucks an hour or so and you can't live on that. So why do people stay when Kroger pays little and expects more and more from employees. I have always wondered and need an insiders thoughts on this. Don't give me the flexibility reasons or school, allows you time with kids etc....w/e. You can always find a job that will accomidate you in some way and probably pays the same if not more! (no bad economy crap either)

ps: you may notice the poll has a repeat question. This is because these are really the only two options with lazy sob being the majority.

Managers aren't hourly pay they are salary pay.. Unless you are talking about department head managers or administrative manager the they are hourly pay..

Department managers top out at $18+/- in my store + gauranteed 8 hours OT if old contract.  They make more than the co managers per year.

When I am a Department manager, I will also be making $18 an hour.  I am not a slacker.   I enjoy working in retail.  Either you like it or not.  I do have side businesses that I work when I have spare time.

Someone is sour. Personally, I've been using as it a means for when I do decide to move on. I make near 20$ an hour, pay 260$ a year for insurance and benefits that rival competition, and making a mistake in a right to work state or pissing off the wrong person does not guarantee job lose. Really, if put effort into your work, Kroger can be worth it in the sort term, but most people would rather complain than get the job done.

You guys must live in like Georgia or some other low-salary state... here grocery journeymen top out at over $19/hour, and the managers all make at least 65k a year, many of them well above that. Of course, everything in this state is expensive, so it sort of balances out. As for why I stick around, I'm in college now but I spent several years just working and it was a great jumping-off point to do something else. I can't really complain about cheap, good health insurance and enough pay to live pretty comfortably, and with only a HS diploma.

You forgot an option, something along the lines of
"Currently seeking other employment but need money right now"

If you can't live on $15 an hour, try telling that to people who have to make it making less than that. If you can't make it on $15 an hour then maybe you need to look at why you're spending that much.

Market manager job pays well in texas with the low cost of living, benefits are nice, work in a good store. SW D11 district manager is a pretty nice woman too, so can't complain.

I could make more for other companies, sure.. but then again kroger will eventually own those too. lol

I've been with Kroger for over 20 years. I have no criminal record, and I am certainly not lazy. I guess I'm one of those rare ones who actually like my job. Is it perfect? No, I have my frustrations just like anyone else. Sometimes I wonder just what the corporate honchos are smoking. But the real part of my job, taking care of my customers,is what I enjoy and where I get my job satisfaction. I started as a sacker, worked as a checker, night stocker, drug/gm clerk, meat clerk, and currently seafood lead. I didn't plan on a Kroger career, it was just a job to help pay for college. But here I am, and I have to say, I don't regret having stayed. My own opinion, your mileage may vary, etc.

Mrs. Walker is cool, but she is very much one of those people that like people that play her up.

As for other companies, HEB, Costco, WinCo, and Whole Foods are all scary competition that are expanding in the next two years in the DFW market. To be honest, HEB would be my biggest fear if I were higher up in the chain; Butt has already commented that he does not care if the company runs at a loss for the next several years so long as they plant footholds in key locations, something Kroger's board could never dream to do. Kroger cares too much in the quarterly when it comes to profit, in part because it is publicly traded, but I feel that will come back to bite Kroger in the ass.

Um...Kroger is THE 2nd LARGEST RETAILER in the country, and Walmart is definitely NOT an option! Sorry, Walmart!

Not lazy here - nor do I have a criminal record. I happen to enjoy my job, too. I have some frustrations about them being stingy with the hours, but for the most part am happy.

I've been in the grocery trucking biz long enough to know I have it better at Kroger than at most other trucking companies, (or grocery stores) I have worked for in the past. Of course, I work in a DC, but I go to the stores too. The pay could be better though...

You must ne a kid or a trust fund baby that has had a pretty little silver spoon in your mouth all your life if you cant live off 15 an hour.

That being said us working class folk work there because many of us don't have the time or money to sit on our butts and look through tje classifieds to find something better. We have kids, wives husbands and bills.

Also did you ever think that maybe we like what we do? I love my job, the pay could ne better and yesit can be a bit much sometimes but I wouldn't leave my shop for anything. Kroger has opened a lot of doors for me. I love this place. So screw you and go to ghettomart oops I mean walmart.

Btw I feel bad for your employer, they haven't a clue of how poor your work ethic is

I stay because it's the only job I somewhat enjoy, even with all the extra crap they pile on us. I like helping out our customers and getting to know them. I'm a very shy person so doing this job forces me to be more outgoing. I also love my coworkers for the most part. The crew I'm working with on the front end atm are some of the best people I've ever had the pleasure to work with in my 7 years with Kroger. I also like that I get to work all closing shifts mostly (I'm not a morning person at all). There's a lot of things that could be a helluva lot better here but I know from experience that at other places I could have it worse so I just enjoy the good days and count down the hours till close during the bad ones.

...Or you could go work in a fast food joint and go on the picket line because you're not making enough to live on...Could be worse...If you've worked a long time in the grocery biz, you will reap the benefits. I used to love it when I started as a bagger. I worked for an independent (before Kroger), and these kids would work 2 weeks and say, "When am I gonna get a raise around here?", and I'd say, "HEY! I've been here for 2 years, and I'm STILL waiting...What makes you think you're more special than everyone else? Yeah, good luck on that "raise" thing!!!" Of course...independent=non-union. Kroger came along, and that changed things. At the independent store, it seemed like raises were based on merit, and they weren't guaranteed as there was no contract. As I said, independent=non-union, so I see both sides of the coin...That being said, the Kroger side is better than the alternative, and there are MUCH WORSE jobs in the world! It's one of those things...You can either take it or leave it for what it is...

I don't mind my job here or the pay. The benefits are alright too. What I love is that I work
7am-3:30pm 5 days a week.
This keeps me working for a Kroger company store.

I work in the pharmacy, it's just good to put on a resume. The pay before the most recent union agreement started out at $7.50 and hour. They aren't allowed to hire any fulltime people so anyone who is lucky enough can only get 35 hours a week and that's if their department has a enough hours to do so. Now new techs are making $8 starting but are put in the bottom of the barrel because of seniority instead of work ethic and job performance.

no I have a way better job now so it doesn't matter to me anymore. Kroger has terrible wages and if it wasn't for the afforable care act people like me wouldn't ever be able to get benefits.
