I've worked part time with full time hours for the past 2 1/2 years? Is there anything in the kroger contract that says I become full time after an "X" amount of hours for an "X" amount of years? I'm worried that the my hours are going to start getting slashed the closer it gets to Obamacare being approved.
What state are you in? Don't give store location. What contract are you under?
I think the southern states use consecutive hours worked for becoming fulltime. In our state, you have to sign bids. They have two too many fulltimers at my store, so I sign bids for other stores.
I have heard my hours will be cut to 28 per week but I will still volunteer for extra hours.
I'm in Michigan, the contract is from June 2010 to June 2013.
I am in same state and likely signing the same bids you are. That is all we can do.
I do not see how the work will get done when they cut me to 28. I hit the top pay(3rd tier) soon and it won't effect me too bad. They can't get people to apply for nights and the people that did sign up are useless.
Makes sense. Hire 3 slackers to work 28 hours/week each instead of keeping one good employee @ 40 hours that can do in an hour what all three put together do.
My favorite is when I have to train the new hires because the full timers could care less. It's hard to train someone that could potentially be taking your hours.
"...a full time person is one who is hired as such, or an employee who averages thirty-six (36) hours or more during their basic work week for twelve (12) consecutive calendar weeks..."

I had to check old copy of contract. That is for benefits eligibility. I would need to be awarded a full time position to be full time. I definitely have averaged 40 hours a week for the last year consecutively. The benefits don't effect me. I have no dependants and am not married.

Ah, you're only interested in the hours. Well, you could do the opposite of what you want and only get 28 hours. They wouldn't be able to deny you (at least starting in September). But, that doesn't sound like something you'd be interested in. I guess you'll just have to do what the other poster said or maybe have a talk with your manager. You could argue a full time position is needed and you'd be the most qualified for the job.
I get the full time hours and benefits for now, but not the "status" which means they can knock down my hours any time they want. Why can't they just give me the freak'n status so i don't an ulcer wondering if my family will have insurance and I don't have to look for a second job.

I think I am highly qaulified. I miraculously get 21 hours worth of work done with only me and 1 helper working under me. I have signed over 10 bids over the years but keep missing out. The first 8 were because I don't have enough senority. I kept thinking, 'I am going to have enough senority one day'. The new contract gives managers the discretion to go by "skill and ability". I am having a difficult time in interviews proving my skill and ability. Not only am I shy, I spend my time doing actual work, not learning the actual language about my job that the managers want to hear. I completely enbarassed myself in the last interview. It was with a store manager and a district manager. That was a first for me. I made an even bigger mistake going in without any sleep for 18 hours. My brain was mush. A nephew needed emergency help moving out of his apartment before I had to go to work. Then, I worked a 10 1/2 hour shift for Kroger. Went home, jumped in shower, jumped out and showed up to the interview 3 minutes late. I will schedule my next interviews on my day off from now on after I have had a good nights rest.
I will get full time eventually. Not my loss that they don't select me. The manager that does select me will never be disappointed.
The rumor in our store is I am going down to 28 hours per week by October. Period. Supposedly, corporate will start firing store managers and bring in someone that will get the job done. Right now, they are trying to schedule me 32 hours. I am already 3.25 hours over that and I still have 3 days left in this week.
Meijers has cut their part timers, new hirees, down to 24 hours a week.

Forgot to mention: We already have 2 too many fulltime people in my store. Even if 2 full timers transfer or retire, they will not make an opening. Most stores are close enough to me that I don't mind driving a little further.
