I don't get it?

If this whole Obama care thing may not start till sometime 2015, then why are all the part timers getting their hours cut? At this point the Obama care might not even happen. Is there any other reasons why Kroger would gouge us out of hours? If this does take effect, what would be the point of a union? I thought they were just there to secure our insurance.

I do not get it either.  The union doesn't have as much pull as it used to.  Employees cannot really go on strike because Kroger would just close stores and move to another state.

I do not agree with all the legalistic rules of the union but realize, if it wasn't for the union, Kroger would be paying me $6 an hour for ever if they could get away with it.

It might have something to do with the more hours you work, the more taxes kroger has to pay.  Every nickel counts in the retail world.  Of course, they can pay me an hour to do something or bring in a slacker and pay them 3 hours for the same work.  Spend a dime to save a penny.

It is obvious that kroger wants to go to 85% part-time employees(someone posted the number but I can't remember it).  Each employee is just a unit of labor.  Everyone works and produces exactly the same(in a perfect world).  Kroger wants many people to be cross trained.  The new contracts show newest hired part-timers making the least money.

The next step I could see is for kroger to get rid of people that are paid more than the newest part-timers are making.  Most Oldtimers are close to retirement.  It would be easy to find reasons to be rid of the other "overpaid" employees.  This might not happen soon, but as powerless as the union is, I could see this transition over the next 10 years.

Meijer is trying to hold employees to 24 hours a week.  But do not have enough employees at the moment.

It is not just kroger, it is all retail businesses(Walmart, MickyDs, etc).  Someone somewhere made a business model and every retail company is buying into it.  Probably originates from Six Sigma.  Instead of the customer or employee being important, the bottom line is important.   Just like Rome, it is only a matter of time before this business model falls apart.

I was wondering what the Ratio from the part time to full time employee's were in the Kroger company. With the stores cutting hours and getting larger and busier it's inevitable that it may just very well fold in on its self?

I was under the impression that the ratio was 30/70.

Obamacare's major provisions go into effect starting October 1st. The rest of it starts January 1st.

By the way, saying the unions give people raises is giving them too much credit. The Krogers without unions still have raises. For the love of God, stop spreading lies just to make the union look good. It's a horrible organization that needs to be destroyed (at least UFCW).

Honestly I've never met anyone from my local, the store steward's have old information and if you have a question they always say to ask the store manager. Maybe its just my store, but they are as clueless as my union local. At least they should get my $10 a week along with everyone else. And wth? in the 876 we signed a new contract deal in may and still don't have any of those handy union books!

My representative is actually pretty good. They're willing to talk to you and rummage through papers while driving through traffic. That takes some dedication!

As for the individual stores, however, that's pretty much everywhere. No one really knows anything. Makes ya wonder what good a steward is for. It became VERY apparent to me soon after the vote that it was mostly full-timers or lifers who seemed to have voted "yes" for that new contract. They and the union don't care about the employees under the newer provisions of contracts. Heck, most of the part timers didn't even seem to know the vote took place. It was as if the full-timers were in the know while the part timers were purposely kept oblivious (as a matter of fact, that's how it was exactly at my store).

But, hey, without the union, we'd die. We wouldn't get raises, breaks, lunches, or even air. It's thanks to the union we get these things. Just ask anyone who's pro-union or who supports this contract. We gotta live in fear for our own sake.

Our kroger has enough problems getting employees for the crappy rates they pay. Any lower then this store would be screwed. So at least at our Kroger, the union is useless when it comes to pay rates.

One day I was given a few pieces of paper explaining....kinda..our new contracts and the next day was the voting ballot. Out in BFE! What a drive, it would make sense....I know that's silly talking about making sense and kroger in the same reference..for someone from the union to come out to the stores and give us night stockers a way to vote.

Interesting.  I hear people at my store complain about hours being cut and stuff yet this week I am getting 35 hours.  And i am not a part of the union.
I do wish my hours wouldn't fluctuate like they do.  Two weeks ago i got like 32, last week I got 24-ish, and this week I got 35.   I would like a more stable schedule that fluctuates maybe 2 or 3 hours a week.

Sometimes its even more simple than that. We got 20 hours cut because our phone calls are now routed through a call center. We are NOT on the phone 20 hours per week. Flu season is starting, we're short staffed, and you want to cut 20 hours out of my schedule? I guess I won't be in the 100-105% for ELMS. I have 3 full timers. That chews up the majority of my hours.

It's called a BUDGET...the amout of hours a store/department is allowed to schedule fluctuates weekly based on historical sales from previous year versus projected sales for the upcoming week...In other words, just like you and your BUDGET, if your check is small this week you have to watch how you spend money and be a little tight, frugal and smart with it.  The weeks you get a larger check you may be able to splurge a bit and spend more.

A store's budget comes down from G.O. then editted through Division then editted through District then Store Management. The reason your hours vary from week to week is that there is a fixed number of employees within the store/department that share that budget. If a department is given 90hours one week between one FT and two PT employees, it'll be split FT-40/PT-25/PT-25 depending on availability.  If the following week the busget drops to 76hours, then it's split FT-40/PT-18/PT-18...we all share in that BUDGET and by trying to schedule to ensure everyone has some hours to work every week, PT associates may see their hours fluctuate from one week at 25hours to 18hours the next and so on...it's NOT OBAMA CARE doing this...It's daily business operations...
