I have worked at Kroger for 3 and 1/2 months now as a courtesy clerk. One of the front end supervisers and I were chatting and I don't know how we got to talking about what we were talking about. Next thing I know, he tells me that like 5 or 6 cashiers are in the process of quiting or have already quit. I casually say something like, "Well you guys should make me a cashier." The next day, I come in and a couple hours into my shift, I am called up stairs. The guy says, "I heard your interested in changing positions. I said yes and then he said "Well, how would you like to be moved to the meat department?" I think he may have said the position was meat slicer but I cant remember exactly. The meat department manager came up to me and I told her I was interested in the position. Now that you have the back story, I have a couple questions. 1. Would I technically call this a promotion? 2. Will my pay change? (Currently making minimum wage) 3. I usually get 30+ hours. Will I get less hours now or does that depend on the store? If any, sorry for grammar mistakes. Currenty typing on mobile.
it depends if your meat department has a separate contract. It kind of is a promotion if you're coded in as a courtesy clerk because you'll get raises and stuff but your raise countdown will only start once they change your position in the computer.
Your pay will, most likely, not change.

If you ever want to make more than minimum wage, you need to do something else besides being a courtesy clerk. In my division (Mid South) courtesy clerks get a raise after 6 months and another one 6 months later. That's it except for contract raises. If you do move to another department, your pay will probably be the same as it is now since you've only worked there 3 1/2 months but you'll get a raise every six months. If there's a contract raise ( that's when everybody's rate of pay goes up) you'll get another raise then too and also move into a higher pay scale.
No, it wouldn't. You're there to make money. The first question you always ask after finding out what your responsibilities are is, "How much will I make?"
I started out as a Couresty Clerk making $5.25 / hr and had been with Kroger for only a few months. Six months later they came up to me saying they had an opening in the meat department and wanted me to stock lunchmeat. I asked of course if there was a pay raise involved and they said yes. Well, I achieved full-time 3 months later and my wage kept getting knocked up every 6 months until i topped out at like $12.45 / hr a few years ago. I'm now a market assistant making $14.30 / hr here in the DFW area. I would go with it and learn as much as you can it is worth it, but it is ALOT of work. Its breaking down the truck, organizing, stocking, cleaning, etc but you will get there. Once you've been back there for 6 months I would contact the union and see if you can get a pay grade bump for your 3 years on the front-end. A union representative in my area told me that Kroger will *sometimes* honor it.
