Just recently became a cashier and had some questions. How does one print out a receipt to see the items on there before the customer has paid or how to scroll through the items on the screen? When I get a manager's special item and it doesn't scan do I just type in the upc and hit enter? Any other things worth telling me about?
If you ever need to double-print a receipt, the code is No Sale, 99, Sign-On.
A tip to increase your speed on express lanes is that you don't have to bag every item immediately after you scan it. You can set a few items to the side if you know you won't be able to quickly get them into a bag, and then start sacking those after you've totaled the order out and the customer is paying. I like waiting until the end to finish sacking everything also because then I can ask a customer which bags they want certain items in, rather than just assuming that it's ok to bag a small thing of meat with a package of corn. Sometimes the customer wants as few bags as possible and will ask you to bag them together, and other times customers will get mad if you bag those two items together, so it's always good to ask.
keep your money straight, watch out for quick-change scammers. don't let them add money after the transaction; give them the change the register tells you. we've lost a lot of money that way and it's a sure path to unemployment. learn your common produce. that's about it. there's supervisors who can talk you through the rest.
for manager's special stickers that won't scan, type in the #, all the digits. the last few are the actual price.
for normal upc or kroger card # manual entry, you leave off the last digit.
bag as you go on express, spin counterclockwise, make sure the bags are open so you just have to drop stuff in. items that are awkward should go on top of the carrousel. if people have their own bags ... @#$* why are you on express... i just bag after scanning as I waste time fighting to keep the bags in place.
speed will come in time, accuracy is the goal right now. don't throw produce. just make sure it reaches the bagger side belt. customers perception of what you're doing can be tricky. you don't want to be seen as reckless with people's food. enjoy yourself. i miss being just a cashier. it's the same pay without the stress of orchestrating the FE circus.
The tip about not taking money after entering in the amount is a big one. I myself have already had two people try to short change scam me. Yes, they will get mad at you when you refuse to take any more money after the cash register opens, but that's fine, they can deal with it. The registers are not a bank anyways. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Do a forum search. There are a few threads with good advice.
Void then enter undoes the last action.
Until you tender the order, it's possible to undo most actions without managerial intervention. Up to a certain dollar amount, anyways. Just hit void and repeat the action. You can even cancel orders by voiding all of the items and then pressing void then total.
If a customer finds a coupon for a food item or wants to remove a food item after you run their EBT card, you need to cancel the EBT transaction first. If you don't, it will cause a problem with the register. You will need a manager to void the entire order, and you will need to rescan everything. This is a problem since most people blow their entire EBT in one huge stupid shopping spree.
Don't scan any coupons at all without a shopper's card. Store coupons flat out won't work, and there is a good reason for not scanning manufacturer's coupons.
Hold onto or set aside gift cards until the order is finished.
Don't use a "store card", and if you use a fresh card out of the drawer, throw it in the bag and make sure the customer leaves with it. There's a lot of abuse of fuel points, and people at my store got written up by corporate for putting cards back in the drawer.
Card everybody all the time. Don't let them pressure you. Kroger sucks and isn't worth jail time and fines.

Not true at all actually. You just have to void off their EBT payment by hitting void, then EFT. Then have them redo the EBT payment. Then they can pay for the rest of the order.
