This morning I was slicing meat for sandwich production and I kept smelling this awful odor. The bakery person smelled it too - every time she walked by. Turns out it was coming from underneath the slicer. Um, Gross. So I move the slicer to clean under it (thanks a lot night crew for doing your job)... I wanted to see if there was anything on the slicer itself on the bottom so I tipped it on it's side and OH MY GOD - the nastiness that flowed out of it. STINKY tan colored water from inside flowed out. THERE was the odor. The closer shift was told not to "dump" water on the slicer, but they continue to do so. I imagine the other 2 slicers must be in the same condition. Going to run it by our deli manager tomorrow. Really honks me off that people don't care. I know the pay is lousy - so leave. Don't stay and do your job half ass.
That is a MAJOR health issue right there!! What if you didn't thin of the slicer (thank God you did) and continued to slice meat. Say the water somehow got onto meat. Tainted meat+customer+food poisoning=Health Dept=hefty fine+possible shut down.
EVEN if there was no chance of contamination, the smell alone is a turn off. Plus if customers got a whiff they may say it is too unsanitary
Yeah, no kidding! I am disgusted......and those other slicers need to be tipped over and cleaned. I mean - every time I take the bag off in the morning there's a gross odor and that should NOT be. I don't think there's any way for the water to get on the meat - - but it's also not good for the motor of the slicer. The one in question that I tipped over today just had some mechanical issues about 2 months back and we were without it for a good week or more while it was being fixed. Yeah this crap has to stop. Unsanitary.

I've worked in the deli department for over 20 years and that's the first time I've ever heard of anyone doing that. Weren't they told the proper way to break down, clean, and sanitize the slicers?
Well, I've been there for a few months and I watched a video on how to clean the slicer before I started to work in the deli - and you are right - dumping water on it is not the proper way and is not taught in the video. Not sure where they "learned" to do it. It's very maddening. Guess it's a shortcut - they figure they can just swoosh away the grime and not put any elbow grease into it. I dunno.
Deli isn't one of my areas, but after reading this I'm gonna do a THOROUGH inspection of ALL their equipment first thing tomorrow. Somebody could literally die from that kind of contamination.
Yes, we have one slicer just for cheese and 2 for meat.
They have had quite a bit of turnover in our deli, too. There are 4 that have been there for quite a while - and then we have 3 new hires. Curious to see how long they stick around. :)
The slicer started to smell again today so tomorrow morning when I go in at 6 am (I make the Boar's Head sandwiches and salalds) I am going to tip it over and see if anything comes out AND take pictures of it.
Have you even cleaned the restroom after someone **** all over the floor and wall's? Yes I said wall's I have yet to find out how they do that on the wall's. Also finding draws men and womens with **** in them. That is gross and smell's. Women leave there tampon's in the restroom that also smell's. Really get over it and do what you are paid to do. And as for gross I found a pair of pink panties once. I no longer work for Kroger I now live in Germany. I have worked Grocery stores here and just to let you know people here are gross also.
Get over it and do what I'm paid to do? Really????? Are you retarded?
Yes I am. :)

I guess they should just drop them off in the deli. LOL.
That poster obviously isnt reading for content...instead just zeroing in on the smell factor.
They should flush the tampon. And if someone ***** theirself they should go home and change.
It's just plain nasty. I'd love to see ANYONE not be upset at having to clean nasty, smelling, questionable items off a slicer an not be upset. It's freaking unsanitary. I NEVER tell anyone to get over it... And I've cleaned filled pants both (semi Solid and liquid #2's), feces on the walls AND ceiling, vomit all over the place, semen from the men's restroom walls, etc.

You know that it is bad for septic systems for tampons to be flushed, right? I assume not since you'd rather have septic issues. Those things can really make someone have a BAD day when it plugs up the system.
I wasn't complaining about having to clean anything - I did it on my own - no one told me to. I was glad to have found the source of the awful odor - it was making everyone gag. Complaining about those that have been dumping the water - not having any respect for the equipment or for other people. I worked the night shift last night - and I cleaned the slicers.
Everyone else knew what you were talking about, and you had a legit complaint. The Anon who said that you should shut up and do it is ignorant.
OK I am sorry. I am Anon and I was just kinda kidding. I know it was harsh but that is the way I am. Even at work I sometimes pop back at people like that. I guess it is different on a forum than in real life. I kid around alot with people. It is also good if you see a point in that situation there are idiots that work at every store. I mean all kind of craziness. Like today the plastic that we recycle and bag up in the huge bag. There was 2 huge bags in one bag no one cared to stop 5 minutes to tie it up and put it on the salvage truck. Also none of the stockers takes 5 minutes to make a bale. We have had so much cardboard in the baler at one time the wires would break when it was baled out. Also our dairy people put old milk gallons in our compactor and that causes a huge mess because when it compacts it shoots out the front and smells really really bad. People like me the Utility clerk have to get out there in the bearing heat and wash it down and there is flies and maggots also so I really did not mean to sound harsh I just deal with worse things. I wish you good luck. Maybe you should mention this to a manager if it happens again and tell them it is unhealthy. Just think about what I said though about cleaning around the compactor. My shoes aucually work boots they are no good. I can wear them but they are a mess and I only keep them for doing the compactor. I paid good money for them also.
