Yes, the pay the union gets sux and benefits seem to be decreasing. But, the union will be useful if you get disciplined for attendance, ect.
I am not sure how to get out of the union.
If this is not a carreer move, you do not plan on transferring to other departments and you don't want the pension benefits, then, yeah, cancel union membership if you can. I think health insurance might be thru the union also.
in my union contract you must send them a certified letter on your anniversary week stating you want out of the union. It has to be received on that week only. Theres a couple hoops to jump through and even then they might convince you you have to stay in.
For me, it's a matter of "all or nothing." The union is your sole representative. If that's going to be the case anyway, I'd rather try to keep it as strong as possible and use it to my advantage as much as possible.
A right to work state. One of the silliest things I have ever seen. The employee has the "right to quit" and the employer has the right to fire without cause. Let me think about this for half a second to see who benefits from this arrangement. LOL
I second the post above. I too am in a "right to work" state. to me, its more of a "right to get fired for ANYTHING" state. it sucks, and Kroger takes FULL advantage of it!
A right to work state means that you have the right to work without being forced to join the union. You are covered by all the union protection as a union worker.
