So I have been working at Kroger's for 7 months in the floral shop it has been an up and down experience with 4 managers, all new employees, and me taking on a lot of responsibility. Over the course of my seven months I have been pushed to the most seniority in my department except for my manager who has been in for 20 years. I have also relief managed three times. So on the overall I would say that I am a good employee. Well last night one of my friends came in and got a cookie cake from the bakery (which I helped to order), drinks, and some balloons. I rang them up and I charged them incorrectly for the balloons. MY new co-manager calls me in the next day with one of the union people and tells me that I do know the correct prices for the balloons and that I was stealing. Now in my defense the balloons had been popping all night and two popped on her way out, I was having severe difficulty with them all night and was just trying to get her the amount she needed. it was an honest mistake mischarging her with no malice or intent. I have never stolen anything in my life and throughout my time at Kroger have turned down multiple opportunities to sell lighters, cigarettes, and alcohol to people I know that are underage. and now I am brought down by an accident. What is going to happen from here and what do I do.
How exactly did they find out you rang up the balloons wrong? Also, what was the difference between what you charged and the actual cost of the balloons? It sounds to me like they were deliberately trying to catch you doing something wrong. Everyone has mismarked stuff by mistake at one time or another. Don't ever let a co-manager or anyone accuse you of anything if you know you are innocent.
You could be terminated depending on the store manager. Most likely terminated. Sorry, but that is how it is. Never ever steal from an employer.
What is the policy for discounting crappy balloons? Did you follow that policy?
"was an honest mistake mischarging her with no malice or intent." Did you charge her for 4 balloons but let her leave with 7? That is stealing and balloons popping will not sugar coat it. I suggest you get your story straight, let the union rep duke it out for you with Kroger, and do not post anything else in this forum until the investigation is done.
Never ever give a friend a deal ever. You will get burned.
I would say someone watched the transaction or you(or the friend) said something to someone and they tattled. I seriously doubt management is going to watch every balloon and transaction in the floral department. I suppose loss prevention could have been watching video and sound from off site...

Yeah, that is an important detail purposely being left out.
How much do the balloons normally sell for and how much did you ring them up for?
Sounds like she is guilty until proven innocent, which is sadly, like a lot of other things nowadays...I guess people should be glad they're in a union, if at least to have someone fight on their behalf, when stuff like this happens...
That's if the union wants to move their asses and do something.

know the rules, know your rights. If you're a union member you should know who you steward is, what to do when they drop the ball, how long your rep has to handle things, and who to call if they drop the ball.
