So, I currently work at Kroger. After seeing my current situation here (being asked to perform three distinct jobs while only being paid 7.35 with no raise in sight), I've decided to look for and secure another job.

Problem is, I lack references. Kroger is my first job, I have no references outside of my family. I'm reluctant to ask any member of store management for fear of reprisal.

Can I ask regular co-workers? Anyone else I should ask?

Any advice regarding job hunting in general would be greatly appreciated.

Ask a supervisor. Anyone that has seen your work and is a supervisor.

As for job hunting, talk to the ground level employees if possible any where you wish to apply before your interview.

Co-workers can be good references, just be careful who you ask to be a reference and make sure they won't go to management and "tattle" on you. Management and family members are definitely No-Nos. Personal friends outside of work can also be good references if they have known you for a long time (at least several years). Also be prepared to answer the question "Why did you leave your last job?" (at Kroger) in a positive, rather than a negative way. Good luck job hunting in this economy.

What about going to school?

I'm currently enrolled in six classes. I get to campus at around 7 AM and don't get home until 9 PM.

Unfortunately, the way I see it, Kroger (or at least the management here) is slowly trying to either force me to having only 5 hours a week or just quit. They're already scheduling me on days I have classes, even though I've provided them my availability in writing weeks before classes started.

They seemed to have been ok with it until we've started getting newer management people.

Also, I have realized that I apparently will not be getting a "raise" from minimum wage anytime soon. My payscale thing (the thing that indicates when you'll get a raise) hasn't moved at all ever since I've been hired.

I'll try asking friends to be references then.

As for co-workers, if I can break the language barrier (almost half of my coworkers can barely speak English smoothly) I'm sure they'll be nice about it.

On a random note, I find it interesting that everyone else I work with in my department(s) are at least twice my age. The college students are at the front end as cashiers or courtesy clerks.

Read this.

The payoff on that life decision is not what it used to be.
