Hello everyone, I work for Ralphs in Southern California I am a "combo clerk" (which basically is a courtesy clerk that also operates the registers when needed). I have been working with the company for a year now, and today I got a form to fill out for declaration for promotion to a department. I filled it out and selected that I wanted to become a cashier, because I think that is the easiest position to be promoted to since I already know how to operate the registers, I know all my produce codes, and I constantly get over 100% on the weekly ELMS productivity report. My manager ended up telling me that courtesy clerks/combo clerks can't promoted directly to cashier without going through a department first for a year. I've also asked a couple of coworkers about that and they told me that its true. I personally think that is ridiculous because I think I'm already over-qualified to be a cashier, there have been a lot of days where I've been on the register all full 8 hours because of Que-Vision and them being understaffed. And if I go to a department for a year by the time I become a cashier I would probably have forgotten the produce codes and how to operate it.
My question to you guys, does your store/division also have the same rules for courtesy clerks to get promoted to a cashier? Or is it just a Ralphs thing.
Not true. Been with Ralphs 40 years and though they prefer to pfomote from the GM category, nothing is set in stone. The store mgr. has to have all promotions approved by the Dist. Mgr. I know of many instances that a boboy has been directly promoted to cashier, especially if their communications skills are really good. Basically, I mean able to speak English as most newer people are Hispanic and their language is primarily Spanish
That's weird. I mean if you go to a department you're going to be trained in that. If it's a service dept. you'll never run register so you might forget a lot of it. If you go to produce or dairy, you'd end up running register half the day anyway...
That's what I thought so too, because it doesn't make any sense to me. I also have a friend that works at a Safeway store that's under the same local union contract as my Ralphs, and he went from bagboy directly to cashier, so I know it has nothing to do with the union.
I think that my store/managers just came up with that crap because they probably don't want any more people using up more cashier hours, and rather have me go to one of the departments and use their hours. That's what I'm thinking.
That's fine, I'll probably have a better time at the meat department which is one of the departments I selected on my declaration (since cashier wasn't an option). Maybe is for the best.
You're running a register while being a bagger and not coded under cashier? Sounds like your people are playing the system. Baggers don't get raises and if you're using the register.... dude you're a cashier.
That **** has to change.

Well the way it works (at least in my division) is that I'm still a courtesy clerk and when I'm not signed on the register I get paid the same rate as all the other courtesy clerks. When I sign on the register I get paid an extra .50cents, which is fine by me I get paid a little more than the other baggers when I'm on the register. But I'm still considered a Courtesy Clerk, and my pay will reamain the same and not go up like a cashier where it reaches up to a certain cap (top pay). I was hoping that when it came to promotion time I would be able request to be a cashier on my declaration form, and when the position became available they eventually they would promote me. But according to them it is possible to be a cashier but I have to go to a department first then from there I can then request to be a cashier.
