I have heard of a lot of stupid stuff happening with this company, but what I found out recently took me aback. Apparently our district manager had the bright idea to move the grocery crew, sans dairy and drug/gm, to overnights. The reason behind this is the dm doesn't want them to be in the way of the customers during prime hours. I just can't wait to see what the next insane idea these so-called geniuses come up with that's beneficial for the employees and customers. Has anyone else noticed anything similar to this insipid logic?

Our store's done this too, though only partially (for now!). I'm front end, but from what I've gathered, a lot of the stockers start at around 3-4 AM now, and the same reason was cited, complaints such as "I can't maneuver through the aisles because people are stocking" clogging OSATs were a key factor.
Yes, it is happenning at our store. Still a lot of shifting going on.
If the stockers are full time, they need to try to fight it thru the union. I do not think there is much the union can do except stall it or get the DM to change policy. "They can not be forced onto nights from being on days so long" is the belief so far. Basically, 4 part timers have quit so far because they refuse to go to nights. 2 Full timers are still on days for the time being. But, if they set their availability to only day shift, their hours will be drastically reduced and they could be forced to a part time position. Their options are to bump people with less senority in other departments within the store, transfer to another store(maybe), or lose their job. We might have people coming into our store and bumping people with less senority in our store! To add to the confusion, we might be getting employees from 2 stores that were closed. I think it is going to be a domino effect for the next 2 months at our store before everything settles down.
I am part time and have worked nights since I started. It doesn't effect me yet. Might take hours away from me if people transfer from other stores. Working nights is a different lifestyle but I am used to it and don't mind. Unless someone with more skill and ability comes in from another store, I run the night crew once a week. It will be awkward having a part timer in charge of full timers.

I swear there is a site that tells customers to be a pia to the workers.
It doesn't matter where I park the Lcart or what I am working on, the customers always need to see behind and reach over the Lcart every single time. I will be opening a case for stock 10 feet away and the customer stops right where I need to go every single time!! They won't buy anything, just stop and pretend like they are thinking about it. To keep the customers on their toes, I will grab stock that goes in the other direction and work on that until they pass...

What I've noticed is no matter how far out of the way I place my cart so it doesn't interfere with traffic flow, some customer will just have to squeeze theough the small space I'm working in, even though there's a big open space for them to walk around me.
I'm pretty sure some customers just like getting in the way just for the sake of getting in the way.
I've noticed that whenever I'm working at Self-Scan and there are no customers around, and I go to put bags on one of the carousels or go to clean up at one of the self-checkout lanes, as soon as a customer shows up, they choose to come up to the one I'm working on and stand there and wait for me to finish, looking impatient like I'm holding them up. It's stupid how many times I've had to say "Could you please use another one? The other three are open and I'm trying to put bags on this one."

I agree with everything that's been said here. My question is...WHY DO THEY DO THIS??? Is there some sort of retail psychology that I don't know about, that explains exactly WHY people do this stuff???? It makes no sense at all!!!

I was using the U-Scan at another Kroger store. I was wearing regular clothes. So no one knew I worked for Kroger. I was the only one in the U-scan area. Some stupid woman places her items on the checkout I was using. I said, "There's three others that aren't being used. You need to use one of those. I'm still using this one." She thought I was rude.
i dont understand. how can they just MAKE people start working overnights or lose their job?? someone has to sit back and think "gee maybe we're going a little overboard here"
idk. it's stupid that higher ups can't look at it from the employee's perspective for one second, or put themselves in the employee's shoes. that's so unrealistic to think people would be OK with working overnights out of nowhere.
I also dont understand why people complain about people stocking the shelves. Literally that's how your **** gets there for you to purchase it. And for customers to expect there to be NOBODY stocking during the day is dumbfounding to me. I'm sure at times it can be a little inconvenient, but that's just how it goes!! A little respect and common courtesy from both customer and employee go along way. If i'm a customer I'll usually say "sorry if i'm in your way" or "excuse me could i please get past you" or something to that effect.
i apologized to a customer the other day for my cart being where she wanted to be, she was fine with it. I said "eventually it will always be in somebody's way, no matter where I put it.....I swear I could put my cart up on the roof and sure enough there'd be a customer making their way up to prove me right!"
to those customers that complain, I say (as someone else mentioned) "you want product on the shelves or not?" I want to say "don't like it? go to walmart, see if I give a ****"
they've been threatening to move us to night stocking for as long as I can remember. I've always said, I don't mind...I'll just go to another department. I've got plenty of seniority to jump to the top of the list in Pharmacy, near the top in produce, slaughter the bagger list, and fair decent on the checker list.

Keep in mind: Part of key retailing is receiving the pallets "aisle friendly" from the warehouse. And, then we are supposed to run stock directly off the pallets. I do not think the brain trust that thought this up realized how many back injuries will occur from this.
It just isn't practical in every aisle. We tried running off pallets for 2 weeks. Push a shopping cart for cardboard and drag a pallet jack with a 600# pallet and then the aisles are mixed from aisle 10 with items for aisle 4. And some people have no common sense. Our peanut butter aisle was really small at one end of the store. We have a larger than average store. One kid would drag the 400# pallet from aisle 1 all the way to aisle 19 to run 2 cases of peanut butter. He wasn't being a joker, he just was not intelligent enough to figure out to put the peanut butter under his cart and run it later. He did this several times. Finally, after much persuasion, I convinced my night manager to let us use Lcarts for small aisles at the other end of the store.
