Actually Breast Cancer Awareness follows through to October 31 of this month and its approved Kroger gear through Boars Head. File a grievance. You do have a leg to stand on. Also, they must furnish the hat if you dont have one.

Based on your account, I don't think you have a leg to stand on. Bottom line, you get a direct order (and your S.M. saying "I don't want to see you wearing that hat any more" is pretty obviously a direct order), you comply with it. Or suffer the consequences.
Do you work in the deli? In our store most of us wear Boars Head hats all year round, some people even wear the pink ones all year. I would definitely tell the union, and if you have a boars head rep, tell them about it too.
This really comes down to a simple question. Did you or did you not refuse a simple directive? Never mind all the semantics, you were guilty of insubordination. If you were a manager and had an employee who openly defied you like that, you'd be stupid not to discipline them.
Filing a grievance is for when your rights have been abused. Yours weren't. And if you push this retarded issue, I truly hope you get what's coming to you. I don't often say things like this, but you acted like a two year old refusing a time out.
Oh, and I like how you 'accidentally' edited your original post, so that all the important details got lost, and now you come off like a total victim. Ridiculous.

This. I think there are details OP is leaving out to further their side. If it was me, I would have offered another hat and if OP refused, they're gone. Fess up OP, you defied a direct order from management, didn't you?

Actually his rights were abused when they didn't furnish him a replacement hat as stated within the given contracts. Considering that this is still breast cancer awareness month it is still acceptable to wear the given hat as it is a hat approved by both Kroger and Boars Head. How was abused? He lost scheduled hours in the contract that is rightfully his and should be paid those hours for a silly issue.

I agree with AnonymousCutter. They should have given him another hat.
Plus, deli employees who work in Boars Head stores are allowed to wear Boars Head hats. How can you send someone home for wearing something that is approved by Kroger as part of the uniform? Every Boars Head Kroger I've been to (including my own) has deli employees wearing Boars Head hats. I don't care whether he was told by a manager or not, why should the manager's preference take precedence over a policy to extends to multiple stores? The only way that would be okay is if he worked for a store that didn't sell Boar's Head products.

Watch out, the Kroger drones will come in full force and ignore this logic you speak of.
That said, none of this "insubordination" crap applies in this case. That's like saying that if the manager tells you to do something wrong, like changing dates on a product, that you should just because the manager says so.
Guess what? Managers can be full of it!

JustinA works for WalMart? Doesn't WalMart have their own forum board? If Justin works for Walmart he can't file a grievance because WalMart does not have a union.

I have one word for you...DUH!!!
That being said, this whole issue sounds like a complete load of crap that makes absolutely NO SENSE whatsoever. Sounds like a non-issue being made into an issue, by a manager who is WAY WAY WAY on a power trip...Yes, it happens!!! Of course, let's put things into perspective, shall we? He lost a day, yes, but what if he got suspended the whole week? That being said, the manager still shouldn't have made this big a deal over something so simple as a stupid hat. If the hat's allowed, he can wear it. If the hat's not allowed...simple...GIVE THE GUY A NEW HAT!!! Duh!!! Even a 6-year old can figure that out!!! What's the freakin' problem here?!!! Jeez, people!!!
some things can be different. while we're still in refresh t-shirts we can't wear anything else, no kroger hats, no kroger jackets, no vests... everyone wears the t-shirts even management.
Deli/Bakery is provided with hairnets. During the refresh, if we're not allowed to wear the hats with the ugly t-shirts, we have to wear a hairnet instead. The law requires that anyone who prepares or serves food have their hair covered. (Even if you have a cap, there should really be a hairnet under it. Thank goodness they can't make us stop wearing the aprons (they're are required by the Health Department,) at least those cover part of the hideous shirts.)

What's the problem? Losing a day's pay is the problem! IF sending him(her?) home was unjustified (i can't quite figure out if it was or not, since hats are allowed in deli/bakery, but refusing a direct order, even if it's idiotic, is considered cause) that loss of pay could result in not being able to eat or getting evicted from your apartment. THAT is a big deal.
Not enough information. It kind of sounds like OP got what was coming to him in all honesty though. Plus, I doubt his/her side of the story would be the same as the manager's.
