I work nights. I start at 1am. I always start at 1am everyday. I showed up to work, and no one was there to let me in. Naturally, I banged on the door with my keys to let someone know that I was at the door. Well, 15 minutes passed of banging. I started getting really cold, seeing as it's October. Not expecting this to happen, I wore what I usually wear which is a hoodie. Well, another fifteen minutes passed. I knocked periodically through these minutes, and still to no avail I was not let in. Getting frustrated I started peaking in windows. Another 15 minutes passed after this, and I knocked 3 more times in this duration as loud as I possibly could. So there I sat freezing to death and I was livid. So then I waited another 5 minutes and then left.
So in summary, I sat outside for 50 minutes banging on a door for no one to let me in while freezing. I left after that and went home.
That's why the store has a phone so you can call in case anything happens.
but to answer your question, it all depends on your boss, some are a******s that will write you up for the smallest things. Some are cool and wont say nothing. But I'm 100% positive that the "why didnt you call?" question is gonna come up.
Definitely could- but like the one poster said it depends on the mgmt. mindset. However why did u not call after 5 mins? Who was supposed to be there and couldn't hear u? Sounds like a good possibility they were sleeping in the back or they flat don't care about other employees ...or maybe have a strong dislike for you for something you've done or supposedly done? If it was me I would've called the police after 15 mins with a true concern about the well-being of whoever was on duty. Getting mad and going home will come back on you in some way...
That's the issue. I don't have a smart phone and I don't have the store's number. I guess this situation would prove to say that I do need their number, but I never call in sick nor ever have so I guess it really never crossed my mind to have it. I'm calling up there when our store manager starts his day to complain about what happened. Hopefully he'll understand. I'm mostly furious about the fact that there was no truck there so they had to be in the aisles. Needless to say, I wish I was at my old store. I can't stand the attitude of this night crew.
The way I see it, you should DEMAND a key. No employee should subjected to this. I for one don't have a cell phone, so, if I were in your situation, I would be totally screwed. I've had to come in for midnights before. One time, I went in front of the window to tap on it to get a file maintenance person's attention who was standing within eyesight, and got no response for like, 8 minutes straight. Everyone in my night crew wears headphones/earbuds.
Anyhow, I already let them know, if something like this ever happened to me and I didn't get keys, I was going to go berserk. I won't put up with this crap.
There should be a time period that they must follow in order to write him up. If it happened in October, I would say that time period has already passed. As far as him going home instead of calling, not everyone has a phone, and it is the store's responsibility to make sure that all employees can get inside to work. I would have probably done the same thing and then called later to complain about the situation.

I have yet to visit a Kroger that doesn't have cameras at the front doors. How else could they track theft? In my foyer we have 2 the front doors, 2 at the inside doors, 1 in produce, 4 in meat and seafood, 1 in each hallway leading to the back, 1 in seafood area, 4 in the DSD Recieving, 4 in the side hallway, multiple in pharmacy, 2 in Makeup aisle, and 1 for each register and then some at customer service.

Weird, I didn't know most stores were like that. At my store, the doors are never actually locked. They just turn the power off the sliding doors, so you have to manually slide them open yourself to get in for night shifts.
Store I was at used to do that, until one night someone (who was way too familiar with the computer to be a random crook) just walked in at like 2 am, popped the SCO till open, grabbed the cash and ran out. After that, we locked the doors and put up that till in the safe.

Here isn what I wuld have done. Call the store on my cell. Or go around to the back door and ring the bell. Igf noone answered just keep your finger on the bell until someone came. I am sure someone would get tired of the bell ringing. Don't say you don't have a bell. All stores have a bell for the trucks to let whoever know someone is at the back door having a working bell is part of key retailing :) . And if they gave me trouble about ringing that bell I would call HR also request to be clocked in for the time you waited and if they gave you any trouble about that call HR.
