I work part-time at Kroger, and I've been getting scheduled 40 hours a week the past several weeks other than 1 exception, and last week and this week, I don't get any days off. Well, my schedule says "Off" for one day both of these weeks, but the day before I work until 1:00am, and then I go into work at 12:00am midnight the next day, so that's not even 23 hours in between shifts.
Someone today told me that we're supposed to get at least 1 calender day off every week, and to talk with a union rep about it. I'm curious if anyone else has heard of this though.
Another question I have is that I've had some employees tell me that if you're scheduled for at least 32 hours a week for a certain number of weeks in a row, the store can't deny making you full-time. Is that true? It's been over a month, maybe two or three since I've been scheduled to work less than 33 hours for a week, and I'm usually scheduled between 37 and 40 hours a week.
No one here could possibly know because it varies by your local union contract.
Typically, if you work a certain number of hours for a certain period of time (usually 12 weeks), then you'll either qualify for full-time OR full-time benefits.
As for days off, if you're part-time, you're pretty much at the mercy of the company. Here's some options though:
1. Give yourself some unavailability or request days off. At least where I work, you're allowed to be unavailable one day with no penalty.
2. If you have more than 28 hours, request to give anything above the 28 to another employee.
If you're willing to share your state and local number, we might be able to help you more.
