Forced to Work Thanksgiving?

Just thought I'd make a thread asking if you were unlucky for next week. Get it off your chest. Will you still go see family? Will you cook up a turkey?

Or, were you lucky enough to get the day off? Did you have seniority and request it off? Just lucked out? Volunteered to work the day? Take someone else's shift? Gonna be "sick" that day?

Plus, anyone planning on shopping next Thursday/Friday and/or the Monday following it? Gonna get that cool deal you saw on the paper/net?

At my store they asked who wanted to work on thanksgiving. But I wouldn't mind working since we are closing the store at 4:00.

Nice. In our contract, you have to work 3 years to get holiday pay for Thanksgiving. And then, the managers will just take the 8 hours out for full timers or 4 hours for the part timers who qualify from their total number of hours for the week (36 hours max for full time 24 hours max for part time).

In Dayton/Cincy everyone gets holiday pay.

I work 10-2 that day so i'll still have time for any holiday plans, and i get extra pay, so i'm happy.

I volunteered to work the 11-8 shift (our store closes at 8 that day). I'd rather work than be forced to spend a day off with my family.

Here at my store we close at 4 PM.

Oddly enough, they're not actively looking for people to work that day. I even volunteered but then they said "it's no biggie, it's normally dead here during that day".

Ah well.

They're having me work four hours in the am. All is good. I live about 10 min away (walking) so by the time I get home the food will just be getting prepped to put in the oven. Then I have Blsck Friday off!

Not sure what part of Mississippi would be considered part of the Midsouth division, but i work in Midsouth and we get no holiday pay except for pretty senior workers (like >20 years.)

Wow,  where do you guys work?  In my contract we are guaranteed 40 hours plus under my contract we are guaranteed 8 hours holiday pay.  You don't even have to work the holiday,  just your schedule for the week.  No,  I'm not old- old contract,  just old contract.  Not time and a half on Sundays.

lol, bah humbug!!

What day is Thanksgiving anyway?  Thursday the 28th?

I just checked my schedule.  The Eschedule is working flawlessly.  I am part time scheduled 40 hours.  I guess the 4 hours holiday pay will be OT!

I love my job.

 Michigan.

Full timers get 8 hours holiday pay but are only scheduled 32 hours for the week.

Part timers get 4 hours holiday pay but are only scheduled 36 hours if they have been there enough years to meet he criteria.

Old, old contract are gauranteed 8 hours a week OT if they want it but are scheduled like the other full timers during holidays.

I got lucky for next week. Well, not sure how lucky it would be considered to other people here, but it's actually one of the best schedules I've ever had. Only 39 hours instead of 40 like I normally get though, but it's ok. (I'm part time by the way).

My store's only open until 4:00pm on Thanksgiving.

But yeah. I work mornings every day except Saturday, where I close the store. I get two days off also, one of which is the day before Thanksgiving. Well Monday I go in at morning, but it's 10:00am - 6:00pm, which sucks, but oh well.

Thanksgiving day I open on Self-Scan from 6:00am - 2:00pm.

Friday I go in at 2:00am for file maintenance (was hoping for 12:00am but oh well, at least it wasn't the 4:00am shift).

So overall I'm pretty happy.

I know I'm gonna be working on Thanksgiving since I'm unavailable during the weekends. Probably till closing time at 5:00. As for the shopping? I could do it if there weren't so many crowds.

biggrin

Do your fellow employees a favor and see if someone wants to swap or give you a shift to be off that day. At the very least, let your dept head know so they can call you in when someone scheduled that day calls in "sick."

I have Tuesday through Friday off and I'm new. Only worked 4 days so far. No idea why I was given those days off but hey, I'll take 'em.

1. Probably because they don't trust new people to handle one of the largest rush that an average store will face.

2. Someone with more seniority wanted hours.

Oh well.

I'm working 5am-2pm.  I volunteered to work because I can't pass up the 2.5x holiday pay.  Our store closes at 4:00 so we all can enjoy the holiday.  But I'm sure in 5 years we won't be closed at all so I'm counting my blessings now.

i already know that's going to happen and it's not my problem.  i'm scheduled 40 hours for the week and i'm going to work to that schedule.

I know this is old, but I somehow got lucky and managed to get the day off without requesting (I'm 5 months into Kroger, part time). biggrin

I know I won't have off for Christmas Eve (we close at 4pm) because the department head told me today that she's requesting it off, and it's just 3 people total in my department. But I really don't mind Christmas Eve - I get to get paid to stand around while everyone else at my house runs around like their heads are chopped off, doing last minute cleaning. We yell at each other, throw things around... I'd rather be working, lol
