Employee shot and killed outside St. Matthews Kroger

34-year-old Kroger employee was fatally wounded by a gunshot as he left work Saturday night and died shortly after being rushed to the hospital, St. Matthews Police patrolman Dennis McDonald said.

The employee, identified as Louisville resident Jack Combs, was walking to his car at about 10 p.m. after the end of his shift at the Kroger located at 291 N. Hubbards Lane in the Woodlawn Shopping Center, McDonald said. Combs car was parked in the lot behind the grocery store and the shooting took place at or near the vehicle, he said.

Combs, who lived in the 2400 block of Ashwood Drive in the Highlands, was able to make his way to the front of the store where he collapsed and was found by another employee. He was taken to Baptist Hospital East, McDonald said.

He died at 10:49 p.m. of an unspecified number of gunshots, Deputy jefferson County Coroner Sam Weakley said.

While the area of the shooting wasnt well-lit or traveled at that time of night, police in St. Matthews have not had any trouble there in the past, McDonald said.

Its actually a pretty safe area, he said.

Kroger announced Sunday morning it was offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for Combs death.

The Kroger team is heartbroken as we learned of the loss of Jack Combs. We are reaching out to his family now to see how we can support them during this most difficult time, Kroger public affairs manager Tim McGurk said in a statement. The Kroger security personnel are working closely with the detectives of the St. Matthew's Police Department in an effort to find those responsible."

So far a motive for the killing has not been determined, McDonald said.

Anyone with information on Combs death is asked to call the St. Matthews Police Department at (502) 893-9000.

Hope they find the people who did this.

RIP Jack Combs

Omg, I can't imagine how the employee who found him must feel right now.

I work at the McMahan Plaza store and I didn't hear a thing about it at work today.  I saw it on WHAS news.

Very unfortunate to hear this. This is happened here in Indianapolis 6-7 years ago. A longtime Kroger employee was shot coming in to work by some punks asking for money. One guy is in prison till 2040 and the other until 2022. Not long enough if you ask me. Let's hope police find the jerks who did this.

Yeah I work at 389 (Prospect) and nothing was said about it either. Although I know that all of the associate manager trainees have to go over to 387 today and learn about employee safety, etc.
