I don't think I've ever worked some place full of such, for lack of better words, douchebags! While working at night does constitute that you're going to be around ass holes, I never even dreamed of it being like this. I've been called retarded for being a hard of hearing employee. I've been called, word for word, an "arrogant, lazy, spoiled bitch" who comes in and does nothing all night long. My friend and fellow Coworker was told that she made up her Hydrocephalus and that she should not have gotten away with calling off (even though she had a hospital notices) because she was just a lazy bitch who didn't want to do anything all night. I've had managers chastise me on the sales floor, screaming at me in front of customers like I'm a child. One person even FOLLOWED me into the back room just to lay into me (after yelling at me on the sales floor merely a few minutes before.) This week, I got cut back to only 16 hours and from my understanding, as part of a union store, is not allowed! I have had meetings with managers and higher ups multiple times and it just doesn't seem to do any help expect to make everyone glare at me and blacklist me for bringing the hazing to light. Are there any fellow night workers who have experienced anything like this? I get that as a female I may just be a little bit more sensitive to these kinds of things but I really feel like this is just disgusting and unjust behavior!
Read your contract about low hour limit. Mine is 12 hours a week and anything below that I should claim underemployment.
I work nights and have never been scheduled less than 28 hours in the last 5 years.
Night work is very demanding and a lot of work needs to get done. The computer gives you so much time to condition and then you are expected to run 60 cases an hour. We come in, everyone knows what needs to be done and get the work done.
Yes, I suppose I am an ass hole at times. But, I do not yell at anyone or call anyone names(out loud..)
I think you're not telling the whole story. No one calls someone an "arrogant, lazy, spoiled bitch" for no good reason. I'm not saying that you are, but something must have prompted them to say it. We've had deaf people work at my store and there's never been a problem. So I doubt they're discriminating against you because of that.
Then go work for another company if your soo unhappy. Just because your in a union store doesn't entitle you to get your hours from being cut, If your availibility/lack of production conflicts with it. You say they yelled at you, but you didnt say why. DONT cry and complain here unless your going to tell us whats really happening. If anything is soo unjust call your union rep.
I work with food. I won't say much more, because it gives away my position.
Why don't we get sick days? I know we have personal days, but those can be used up because of family emergencies and can only be obtained after working for a year at the company. I'm going to be honest. I rarely get sick. After working at Krogers for nearly a year and a half, I noticed I was falling sick more often. Why?
Employees come to work sick because they can't afford not to show.
We cough in the food. We phlegm and spit it in the trash. We sweat our germs out. WE HANDLE RAW AND PREPARED FOOD.
As per the usual Kroger statement, I must admit there are "no excuses" for not giving associates 3-5 sick days a year. If only to prevent an inevitable lawsuit down the road.
As for the union, they do nothing for the associates. We have a dude in our store twice a month and he clearly told me that "He can't vote on matters anymore, it's up to us to fight for what we want". Then why should I pay you $10 a week, you doofus??? You couldn't get us above a $7.50 rate, our state had to change the minimum wage to do that (next year!) and you couldn't get us bloody SICK DAYS.
I also heard that we can't even use our two personal days as sick days, they have to be scheduled.
You'd think if we called in sick we could at least have the HR person code in the day as a personal day but nope, you either come in sick or forfeit your pay completely. And obviously if you're part time you want as many hours as you can get, so you come in and infect food.
