I got hired as a cashier at a career fair. I wanted to work only weekend mornings. The lady that interviewed me talked me into making myself available pretty much all the time on the weekend and also for very long days two days a week. She said this would mean I get hours since this is when the store needs people the most. Note- I am a fourth year college student and this is why I am not available everyday. Also note- the lady that hired me was from corporate HR and not my store. Anyways, I started the job a couple weeks after the career fair and my background check and drug test went through. The scheduler at my store said I needed to come in and start working ASAP after my training and gave me crap about not being available the next day with no notice- so I canceled my school plans and started work. I believe I did fine and learned quickly..I have previously cashiered at target. However, I am getting very upset because for the past three weeks after my initial first day I have not been scheduled. I got called in one day when they got very busy, but never on the official schedule. I really don't know if I should say something, start looking for another job, or what?? Any advice? My union dues are supposed to start next week and I am going to be one pissed off woman if I am paying dues every week but not getting scheduled. I went into my store the other night to buy a few things and the lady that trained me was training another new cashier. So, it appears they still have a need for cashiers. I am already very frustrated by the disorganization I have encountered and the way I got bullied into changing my availability. I really need the money and I like the job! Help me understand please! I only want 10-15 hours a week, nowhere near fulltime, and I'm not even getting four.
also- could this have something to do with eschedule messing up? or people with seniority taking hours? I am new to the kroger scene and am clueless. I have never had an issue getting hours at another job, especially on the weekends.
Honest response? Find something better. You've been pigeon holed into a dummy box where, in all likely hood, these pricks will be only too happy to keep you.
Last semester of college is where your priorities need to remain focused. Take out another loan if you need to; ride it out on that.
That's what I'm thinking! I seriously am so annoyed! I have to go an extra year of college since I switched majors, but I still don't have time for this crap. I made more money at macy's and I didn't have to pay union dues there. Maybe I'm crazy, but I have yet to see a benefit of the union. And, why the heck would someone hire me and say they needed me and approve my availability if it wasn't going to work out? Utter craziness.

They told me they needed me to be available basically open to close on the weekends and nights during the week, and that's what my interviewer said would give me hours. Is it possible they are doing it on purpose? Or does eschedule possibly not know I am in the system? They said since I was a student it was okay that I wasn't available all seven days a week...

It sounds to me like either: your primary labor is not set up right, you're not set to auto schedule, or you don't have enough labors assigned. Also sounds like your schedule writer is too lazy to investigate (it's not that hard actually) and just wants to blame it on you.

Sounds about right, though for a part-time cashier, there shouldn't be much for even the laziest schedule writer to mess up.

There could also be an element of this at play. The Project Faithful are not above lying to rope you into the fold--seen it many times.
If you have other prospects, might be best to skedaddle before the paper cups of cyanide and creepy purple shrouds start coming out.
I have to agree with the others. Leave. I went through similar crap with Kroger when I was hired but didn't leave and I regret it. Only reason I'm staying now is because I like my manager and would feel bad about quitting when I told him I wouldn't. They don't tell you ANYTHING when you're hired, you're left guessing. And sometimes they won't schedule you for long periods of time. Usually a college councilor can recommend certain places that often hire college students near your school and are used to dealing with a student's schedule. I would quit Kroger and talk with your councilor.

Just wanted to say, I am the one that started this forum. I decided to go out on a limb and apply for a job at an upscale department store. Thankfully, I got it! Better hours, making 10.00/hour vs 7.40/hour at kroger. I am glad in a way that kroger sucked because it pushed me to get the hell out and go somewhere better!! I can't believe what an experience this company gave me. I will not be recommending a cashier job there to anyone I know!
