Question On Part Time Employment
Permalink

Hello!  I have a question and could not find any information on it so I would ask here.

I have been to two interviews at Kroger and waiting on background/Drug test results.

I was called today for an interview at Publix. They are interested and I think they may call back for second interview.

Not sure what to do. Kroger is ahead of Publix on the hiring process but they could not call back even. And publix might not want me too.  Hate to turn down one and not get the other.

Someone told me if Kroger calls, then go ahead and start, then if Publix calls check the pay and hours and decide on one or the other.

So my main question is:

If both come thru wanting to hire me can I work part time at both stores if the hours/shifts work out?  Would like to keep the door open at both stores for future part time/full time work if possible.

Wasnt sure if this is even allowed in the first place, or would cause a conflict or bad situation working for two competitors. Weird situation with both happening close to the same time. Do I need to decide on one or the other?

Never been in this situation before so thought I would ask.  Applied for stocking at both stores and not sure the starting pay or hours of each. Kroger wants me for night shift stocking so I know they pay more for nightshift  just not sure what it is and not sure the

starting pay at Publix yet. Too much for me to comprehend at the moment and looking for advice.

Thanks for any help/advice anyone may have!

~M

start at whoever hires you first. Then make your decision from who has better pay/hours.

You can't do both, in your area they're competitors and the company doesn't like that too much. :(

Thx for the replies. Figured that it would not look good or even be allowed.
Will update how it goes.
Wondering now if I did get a chance to do both, how they would know it was a competitor if I just said I had "another job to try to get 40 hours a week" or if I even had to tell them. I know some salesman have a non-compete clause in their contracts but have never heard of or see that anywhere in grocery companies policies. I better look more for that. Guess I could tell a customer in the isle I KNOW they can get that product cheaper at Kroger. hahaha not good.

Yah, if they are both grocery stores, they will both fire you if they find out.  I see a vender at a friends' business that is also a vendor for kroger.  Also, if another employee sees you working at Publix, they will tell someone at kroger and eventually, a manager will find out and have to deal with you.

Now, if you wanted to go work at a farm supply place running a cash register, that would probably be ok.

Oh yea true. Didnt think about someone seeing me from the other store. Must decide on one or the other like suggested if it even happens. Too bad its like that. Thx.

If you quit working at one after a week of training just because the other gives you an extra nickel an hour, then I doubt either one is going to be interested in having you. I will say this though; if Kroger has already called you and you can pass a background and drug test, then you're pretty much hired. The interview is easy and they will be very straightforward on what kind of stuff they expect out of you. BE HONEST in the interview. Don't tell them you can work every day of the week if you obviously can't, and don't ever ASK about the pay.

Yea thats why I hate its happening so close together. Wasnt expecting the Pub call as I applied before Kroger because I didnt think Pub would call. Second time I have put in app there over the past year. Been to second interview with store manager at Kroger and pretty much was told I am in I think. Just waiting on the tests to come in and the call. Had first interview at Publix and waiting on the call back. Not sure if there will be a second interview since the store manager interviewed me unless it is with department managers or team leaders maybe. I'm sure there will be the tests there too and will take a few days for results. Hate this. Ideally I would try to work my butt off at both but that cant happen because of competing companies. Its not like I am working in sales or management. Just stocking shelves and minding my own business. Never in my life have I ever imagined to be in a position like this. lol Nice to be wanted by both (maybe) but sucks too. Surely they have to understand with the economy the way it is people have to work wherever and whenever they can to support their families especially when they dont start full time at either. Just different in this case. I guess I should look for part time work elsewhere too like the CO-OP farm store down the street lol since part time is all it seems you can get these days. Thx for the advice.

The apparatus is designed to reward psychopathy.  "They" do not care because it is not in "their" financial interest to do so.  Never forget this.

I wish you good fortune in whatever course you choose.

You can do two part time jobs as long as they aren't competitors. I know a guy who works at Kroger and Wendy's, and he manages to get over 40 hours that way.

Thx Tatertart.

Will have to do that 4hourrush I guess once choice and hours are sorted out if it even happens. Hope to hear today.

It gets even funnier? Before I applied at Pub the second time and Kroger the first time, I applied at Whole Foods and was called in the next day for an interview. Didnt go to well because of my first real interview and no exp really for what they were looking for. Front end (bagging) to train for Cashier/ Customer Service. No cash exp is what turned them off I think and I was nervous. The job I applied for (bakery) was already filled. But they did say they would keep my app open if another position came up that I would be better at. Now wouldnt that be something if another job popped up and they called?! LOL Think I may be looking in the wrong field of work. Never thought about how these places compete against each other. I shop at them all for different products and whichever one I happen to be close to when I need something. Good thing they dont look down on customers for going to different competing stores. Or do they?
Also have apps in at Costco and Sams! haha

If you are fortunate to get a job at Publix....you need to take it because they are listed as one of the 100 Best companies to work for in the USA. Krogers treats their employees terrible, they have no heart. Krogers are owned by a huge conglomerate that doesn't give a hoot about their employees.    Anne
